Marrit Steenbergen Continues Golden Form With 100 Free Victory In Rotterdam

Marrit Steenbergen made it three golds in as many days as she enjoyed a clear victory in the 100 free at the Rotterdam Qualification Meet.

Steenbergen won the 200 free on the opening day before adding the 100 fly on Friday as she continued the golden form that saw her win titles among seven medals at the European Championships.

On Saturday, the 22-year-old dominated the 100 free to stop the clock at 53.61, her third-best time of the season behind her 53.41 on the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay at the World Championships in Budapest and her season’s best of 53.24 en-route to the individual title in Rome.

The Dutch swimmer split 26.20/27.41 to enjoy a clear victory with Freya Anderson second in 54.71 as the pair replicated their one-two finish in the 200 free and 17-year-old Roos Vanotterdijk third in 55.19.

Niewold Wins 100 After Second-50 Blast

Tom Dean led the men’s 100 free prelims in 49.26 but he didn’t appear for the final with Sean Niewold taking the win after coming from sixth at halfway to finish in 49.29 courtesy of a 25.05 second 50.

Ed Mildred (49.45) and Renzo Tjon A Joe (49.59) completed the podium.

Jonathon Adam added the men’s 100 back to the 50 he won on Friday as he led home a Bath Performance Centre clean sweep in 53.97.

Brodie Williams (54.63) – winner of the 200 back – and Cameron Brooker (55.02) were second and third respectively.

Maaike De Waard took the women’s 100 back in 1:00.19 ahead of Kira Toussaint (1:00.35) and Lotte Hosper (1:01.84).

Steenbergen led the prelims of the women’s 200IM in 2:11.52 but didn’t appear in the final which was won by Candice Hall in 2:16.18.

Thomas Jansen completed the men’s medley double with victory over four lengths in 2:02.42.

Dorsman Continues Golden Form

In the para races, Rogier Dorsman continued a fine meet that has so far brought a European record and two titles with two more.

He started off by leading the way in the 200IM SM11 in 2:20.48 with Lisa Kruger – of the SM10 classification – doing the same in the women’s event in 2:30.45.

The three-time Paralympic champion returned to head the 100 back S11 in 1:10.48.

Gina Boettcher – who swims in the S4 events – headed the women’s 100 back in 1:51.62.

Thomas van Wanrooij won the men’s 100 free S13 in 53.62 with Liesette Bruinsma – who swims in the S11 classification – leading the way in the women’s race in 1:08.36.
