Maggie MacNeil, Kylie Masse to Headline Canada Short-Course Worlds Squad

Swimming Canada on Friday announced a 17-member team for the 2022 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Australia this December, which includes Maggie MacNeil and Kylie Masse.

The group of 11 women and six men will take part in the meet in Melbourne from Dec. 13-18. Leading the way is Masse, who has 14 medals at FINA World Championships, long- and short-course, the most among Canadian swimmers all-time.

MacNeil was one of the leaders on the team that finished second with seven gold medals and tied for third at 15 total medals at the 2021 FINA Short-Course Worlds in Abu Dhabi. MacNeil set one of four world records at the meet, winning the 50 backstroke in 25.27, a 1-2 finish with Masse, who won silver in all three backstroke events.

Sydney Pickrem, who won gold in the 200 IM in Abu Dhabi, and 400 IM winner Tessa Cieplucha are also among the roster for this year.

“It is a strong group, and we look forward to seeing them race in Melbourne at the FINA World Championships,” Swimming Canada High Performance Director John Atkinson said in a press release.

Notably absent from the group is Penny Oleksiak, who is recovering from a meniscus injury, and teen distance sensation Summer McIntosh. Josh Liendo is also not listed on the roster. The freshman at the University of Florida won bronze in the 50 free and 100 free in Abu Dhabi.

Iain McDonald will serve as the team leader, while HPC-Ontario head coach Ryan Mallette will serve as the team’s head coach.
