Lydia Jacoby Lowers Kaitlyn Dobler’s 17-18 NAG Record in 100 Breaststroke

In the 100 breaststroke Friday evening at the Minnesota Invitational, Texas swimmers Anna Elendt and Lydia Jacoby finished 1-2 in a tight race, with the German swimmer getting the better of the Alaska native by six hundredths, 57.48 to 57.54. In the process, Jacoby lowered the U.S. National Age Group record in the event, the 57.71 that Kaitlyn Dobler set in early 2021.

Jacoby was the 2021 Olympic gold medalist in the 100-meter breaststroke as she pulled off a stunning finish to defeat South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker and veteran American teammate Lilly King. Jacoby struggled to recapture her top form during her senior year of high school, and she ended up missing the 2022 World Championships by less than a tenth second as she placed fourth in the 100-meter breast at the U.S. World Championship Trials behind King, Annie Lazor and Dobler.

Dobler set the previous NAG record during her freshman season at USC just days prior to her 19th birthday. Dobler went on to finish second in the event at her first NCAA Championships that season, and she became NCAA champion in the event in March 2022. Currently, Dobler holds the top time in the nation for college swimmers at 56.94, and in Friday’s race, Elendt and Jacoby moved into second and third in the national rankings, respectively, with Jacoby’s 2021 Olympic teammate Alex Walsh sitting as the only other swimmer under 58.

Jacoby will have more opportunities to lower the 17-18 record this season. Her birthday is February 29, so her efforts at the Big-12 Championships in the days before her birthday will count toward that record.
