Leonardo De Deus Qualifies For Third Games, Guilherme Costa Achieves FINA A Standards on Night Three of Brazilian Trials

Leonardo de Deus and Guilherme Costa each added an event for the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro as De Deus won the 200 butterfly and Costa won the 800 free.

Results

Costa won the 800 with a 7:50.41, well under the A standard of 7:54.31 as he is now eighth globally with 94 days until the start of swimming at the Games. Costa adds a second event to his lineup after winning the 400 free on Monday night.

De Deus won the 200 butterfly with a 1:56.01, which was under the 1:56.48 standard. De Deus qualified for his third Olympic team after representing Brazil in the 2012 and 2016 Games. Second went to Matheus Gonche (1:57.57) as he won ahead of Luiz Melo (1:59.51) and Kayky Mota (1:59.76). De Deus is now 11th in the world in the 200 fly.

Aline Rodrigues scored a minor upset in the women’s 200 freestyle with a 1:59.14 over Larissa Oliveira (1:59.49), who represented Brazil in Rio in this event. The A standard was a 1:57.28. Nathalia Almeida won the 200 IM with a 2:13.25, missing the A standard of 2:12.56 as so far no Brazilian women have reached the FINA A standard in an individual event.
