Lawrence Free State, Blue Valley-Southwest Claim Kansas Girls High School Swimming and Diving Titles

TOPEKA – Lawrence Free State High School (6A) and Blue Valley-Southwest High School (5-1A) took home the team titles last night at the Kansas Girls High School Swimming and Diving Championships at the Hummer Sports Complex in Topeka.

Lawrence Free State captured the 6A team title, scoring 424 points to edge Shawnee Mission-East (399 points). Olathe-Northwest came in third with 211 points, followed by Wichita-East (204 points) and OP-Blue Valley-North (183 points).

Lawrence Free State got their meet started on a winning note as the foursome of Courtney Caldwell, Ava Cormaney, Alvena Walpole and Sydney Sirimongkhon-Dyck topped the 200 medley relay in 1:46.37, only .04 in front of Shawnee Mission-East’s Sarah Allegri, Mary Booton, Bonnie Longan and Rilye Fries (1:46.41).

Cierra Campbell gave Lawrence Free State a second consecutive win after posting the top time in the 200 free at 1:51.36, comfortably in front of Shawnee Mission-East’s Crissie Blomquist (1:52.64) and Shawnee Mission-North’s Joely Merriman (1:57.53).

Shortly after helping her relay team to a second place finish in the medley, Shawnee Mission-East’s Rilye Fries claimed the state title in the 200 IM with a 2:05.76, well ahead of Free State’s Alvena Walpole (2:08.12) and Shawnee Mission-Northwest’s Meaghan Bower (2:11.32). Fries added a second win in the 100 fly later in the meet as she touched out Walpole a second time, 56.38 to 56.79.

Free State picked up two other individual victories at the meet, both from senior Courtney Caldwell. Caldwell topped the 100 free by nearly three seconds, posting a 49.62 for the win. A few events later, she won the 100 back by more than two seconds in 54.40. Free State swept all three relays, with Eliza Anderson, Claire Campbell, Sydney Sirimongkhon-Dyck and Cierra Campbell taking the 200 free relay in 1:36.80 and Cierra Campbell, Alvena Walpole, Claire Campbell and Courtney Caldwell topping the 400 free relay in 3:30.00.

Shawnee Mission-East’s Crissie Blomquist won the 500 free in a tight battle over Free State’s Cierra Campbell, 4:57.47 to 4:57.80. Shawnee Mission-Northwest’s Hailey Brull got to the wall first in the 100 breast final in 1:07.88. Blue Valley-North’s Annie Turner placed first in 1-meter diving with a score of 445.25.

Blue Valley-Southwest dominated the 5-1A meet, scoring 379 points to finish just over 200 points ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas (178 points) and Newton (170 points). Andover (169 points) and Maize-South (146 points) rounded out the top five teams.

Blue Valley-Southwest opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, as Madison Moore, Maddie Carrigan, Isabelle Finzen and Gabbi Miller put together a 1:49.21 to top Maize-South (1:53.92) by more than four and a half seconds. It marked the first of Blue Valley-Southwest’s four wins on the day, as Finzen returned to the pool shortly after to win the 200 IM in a close race with Andover-Central’s Brooke Dreiling, 2:11.20 to 2:11.39.

Maddie Carrigan claimed Blue Valley-Southwest’s other individual state title, posting a 1:07.56 in the 100 breast later in the meet. Carrigan then joined Finzen, Moore and Jacqueline Leonard to win the 400 free relay in 3:41.50 in a dominating performance to close out the meet. Bishop Carroll finished seven seconds behind in 3:48.56.

Trinity Academy earned two state titles, both in the sprint freestyle events. Taylor Kostboth raced to a 23.99 in the 50 free final, just over three tenths ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas’ Holly Hanson (24.30) and teammate Kendall Kilgore (24.39). In the 100 free, Kilgore got to the wall first in 53.08, just about four tenths ahead of Maize-South’s Mia Gibson (53.47). Blue Valley-Southwest’s Maddie Carrigan picked up third in 53.75.

Later in the meet, Gibson held off Topeka-West’s Laura Dicus for the 100 back title by only three one-hundredths, 56.64 to 56.67. Wichita-Heights’ Katelyn Blattner (200 free, 1:54.47), Bishop Miege’s Cailey Grunnhard (100 fly, 55.35), Andover-Central’s Brooke Dreiling (500 free, 5:06.64) and Blue Valley-West’s Payton Kisinger (1-meter diving, 477.95) claimed the other individual event titles up for grabs. St. Thomas Aquinas’ Laila Carter, Julia Jenkins, Caroline Backs and Holly Hanson topped the 200 free relay in 1:40.95.
