Kylie Andrews Wins 200 Free; Will Goodwin Earns Second Individual Title at 2018 Speedo Sectionals Austin

Night two of the 2018 Speedo Sectionals stop in Austin, Texas at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center kicked off at 5:30pm this evening. The event lineup included the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 400 IM, and 800 freestyle relay.

Kylie Andrews of Foothills Swim Team placed in the top eight for three events, two individual and one relay. She won the 200 freestyle and got eighth in the 100 backstroke, as well as winning the 800 freestyle relay.

Denver Hilltopper’s Will Goodwin, winner of the 200 breaststroke last night, won the men’s 400 IM as well.

At the end of the evening, University of Denver Hilltoppers topped the team rankings with 381 points, ahead of Colorado Springs Swim Team with 300 points. Highlands Ranch Aquatics sit in third with 286 points.

Women’s 200 Free

University of Houston-bound Kylie Andrews of Foothills Swim Team won the women’s 200-yard freestyle with a quick 1:48.85, less than a second off of her best time of 1:48.17. Behind Andrews was Lainee Jones of Colorado Springs Swimming, who touched in 1:49.16. Third place went to Anastasia Fleming of Austin Trinity Aquatic Club and her time of 1:50.51.

Ashley Loomis, winner of the 1000-yard freestyle yesterday night, finished fourth with a time of 1:50.65. Emily Barrier of Team Vortex put up a time of 1:51.48, good for fifth. Adela Teclova of Colorado Springs Swimming’s time of 1:51.63 put her in sixth place.

Kathryn Shanley of Foothills Swim Team touched seventh in 1:51.68, while Alexa Connors of Kingfish Swimming finished eighth in 1:51.75.

Men’s 200 Freestyle

Previous World Junior record-holder in the event Alexei Sancov of Terrapins Swim Team translated his long course prowess to the short course pool, dominating the men’s 200-yard freestyle in 1:32.80. Kyle Leach of Colorado Springs Swimming nabbed the runner-up spot with his time of 1:36.95, followed by Michael Lincoln of Brown University, swimming unattached. Lincoln’s time of 1:37.74 was good for the bronze.

Seth Hendrix of DU Hilltoppers touched fourth in 1:38.94, with teammate Ryan Peterson just behind in 1:39.14 for fifth.

Jack McLaughlin touched in 1:39.37 for sixth-place, while Jack Moranetz of Foothills Swim Team (1:40.32) and Sean Dwyer of South Metro Storm (1:40.62) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Women’s 100 Backstroke

Natalie Arky, headed to University of Denver in the fall, won the women’s 100-yard backstroke for Highlands Ranch in 54.17 in a close battle. Meredith Rees of Pikes Peak Athletics was close behind in 54.28 for second, while Miriam Guevara of El Paso Aqua Posse touched in 54.37 for third place.

Fourth place went to Highlands Ranch backstroker Elsa Litteken in 54.91, followed by Crawfish Aquatics’ Rylee Moore in 55.02.

Rowan Hodgins stopped the clock in 55.41 for sixth place, while Jessica Larson of Terrapins Swim team finished in 55.57 for seventh. Andrews completed the double-header in the top eight by finishing eighth in the championship final with a 55.82.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

Gavin Olson earned Foothills Swim Team another individual title in the men’s 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 48.05 to win by over half a second. Harrison Lierz of Front Range Barracudas earned the runner-up spot in 48.61, while Andrew Trepanier of South Metro Storm’s time of 49.18 was good for third place.

Gennady Sytnik of Terrapins Swim Team and Connor Miller of Kingfish Swimming tied for fourth place with a time of 50.17. Andrew Rodriguez of Terrapins Swim Team finished sixth, just off the tie with a 50.19. Seventh place went to James Henderson of Crawfish Aquatics in 51.25, and eighth to Nicolas Haddad of Bulldog Aquatic Club in 51.75.

Makayla Cazier of Utah Valley Aquatic Club won the women’s 400-yard IM in a 4:18.74, in a battle with Highlands Ranch’s Delaney Smith, who touched just behind in a 4:18.91. Third place went to Ella Kirschke of Denver Swim Academy in 4:22.39.

Alexandria Schwier of Jeffco Hurricanes touched fourth in 4:23.45, while Catherine Wright of Pikes Peak Athletics earned fifth with her time of 4:26.25. Sixth place went to Jolee Liles of Crawfish Aquatic Club in 4:27.44.

Arky finished seventh with a time of 4:29.17, about a second off her prelims time, while 14-year-old Emma Weber finished eighth in 4:29.75.

Men’s 400 IM

Will Goodwin of DU Hilltoppers, winner of the men’s 200-yard breaststroke, took home another title in the men’s 400-yard IM, finishing in a blistering 3:53.92 to win by almost three seconds. Second place went to Lincoln in 3:56, while third place went to Blayze Jessen of DU Hilltoppers in 3:56.89.

Lierz finished just off the 4-minute mark in 4:00.18 to place fourth, followed by Ryan King of Montrose Marlins in 4:01.15 for fifth.

Braden Whitmarsh of Colorado Springs Swimming (4:02.77), John Boylan of Crawfish Aquatic Club (4:02.82), and Christopher Hardt of Aquastar (4:02.92) finished sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.

Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay

Highlands Ranch’s A team of Smith, Jessica Beckwith, Parker Henry, and Kate Baker won the women’s 800 freestyle relay in 7:29.39, ahead of Foothills Swim Team’s A-team. Shanley, Melinda Johnson, Taylor Juran, and Andrews put together a time of 7:30.68 for Foothills, with Andrews splitting a 1:49.18 on the anchor leg.

Third place went to Rees, Harper Lehman, Clare Sanderson, and Wright of Pikes Peak Athletics, who combined for a time of 7:31.52. DU Hilltoppers finished fourth in 7:32.14.

Kingfish Swimming (7:33.09), Colorado Springs A (7:36.51), Colorado Springs B (7:38.21), and DU Hilltoppers B (7:41.22) also finished in the top eight of relay teams in the event.

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay

The DU Hilltoppers men of Peterson, Goodwin, Jessen, and Hendrix dominated the men’s 800-yard frestyle relay, touching in 6:44.18 to second-place South Metro Storm’s time of 6:51.35. Hendrix had the fastest split of the night, anchoring in 1:38.77. South Metro Storm’s team consisted of Dwyer, Brady Torborg, Trepanier, and Alexander Kraft. Third place went to Thomas Rauchut, Whitmarsh, Daniel Cumnock-Francois, and Leach for Colorado Springs’ A-team in 6:51.41.

Foothills Swim Team (6:54.11), Jeffco Hurricanes (6:54.29), Utah Valley Aquatics (6:58.21), Front Range Barracudas (6:59.46), and DU Hilltoppers B-team (7:02.38) also placed in the top eight of relay teams.
