Kira Toussaint matched the Dutch record of 59.14 she set at the Kazan round to the Swimming World Cup to take the 100m backstroke at the concluding round of the series in Doha this evening.

On a day with few highlights in a shallow pool of world-class racing, Toussaint turned in 28.84 and then, with a 30.30 return, held off Emily Seebohm, the Australia ace on 59.30, a second down win best, her teammate Kaylee McKeown third in 59.60.

Mykhailo Romanchuk, of the Ukraine, sent a remote message to European rival and Olympic champion Gregorio Paltrinieri from Doha when he took down the Italian’s meet mark for a 14:51.61 victory over 1500m freestyle.

Paltrinieri, with whom Romanchuk has sparred with in much speedier moments, had held the Cup record at 14:55.06 since 2015.

Next home today in Qatar was Czech Republic’s Jan Micka on 14:58.30, third place to Hungarian Gergely Gyurta in 14:59.88.

There was a tight tussle in the 50m backstroke, Russia’s Vladimir Morozov on 24.75, 0.04 seconds ahead of American Michael Andrew, and Australian winner of the 200m yesterday, Brad Woodward, in 25.35.
