Kieren Pollard and Zac Incerti Lead Record Breaking Start At The Western Australia State Championships

Day one of the 2020 Hancock Prospecting Western Australian State Championships at the HBA Stadium in Claremont, saw Olympic hopefuls Kieren Pollard and Zac Incerti in record-breaking form.

Twenty-one-year-old rising star Pollard (North Coast) produced the performance of the night with with his new WA Residential Record time of 4:20.17, to take out the 400m individual medley, lowering the previous mark set by Athens Olympian Adam Lucas back in 2004.

On the back of his 1:12.80 breaststroke split, Pollard clocked the fastest Australian time this season, ahead of Nunawading’s Elliot Rogerson who clocked 4:20.49, to win this week’s Queensland State Championships.

In a solo swim in his 20 Years and Over State Title win, the 21-year-old dropped six seconds off his previous best. Pollard, coached by Ian Mills, was recently announced in the Swimming Australia, MLC National Flippers Squad.

Zac Incerti best

The men’s 200m freestyle saw the Michael Palfery-coached Incerti (UWA-West Coast) also set a new WA Residential Record of 1:48.36, previously held by 2012 Olympian, Tommaso D’Orsogna.

Distance freestyle hope Adam Sudlow (UWA-West Coast) finished second in 1:50.58 with 100m freestyle specialist Ashton Brinkworth (UWA-West Coast) third in 1:51.85).

The day kicked off with Rio Olympic silver medallist Tamsin Cook (UWA-West Coast) making her return to competition, claiming the Open title in the women’s 200m freestyle in a morning heat swim of 2:03.77.

Cook swam the anchor-leg in Australia’s silver medal-winning 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2016 Rio Games with Emma McKeon, Leah Neale and Bronte Barratt.

In other events:

  • The fastest men’s 100m backstroke time of the day came from 17-year-old rising star Joshua Edwards-Smith (UWA West Coast) who clocked a time of 56.95.
  • Commonwealth Games and World Championship Dolphin Holly Barratt clocked the fastest 100m backstroke in the women’s events of 1:02.89 while;
  • Rio Olympian Blair Evans (UWA West Coast) was again the standout performer in the women’s 400IM, in a time of 4:47.74.
