Kathrin Demler Snags Trials Cut in Morning, Wins Twice at Ohio State Invitational

The No. 14 women’s and No. 16 men’s Ohio State swimming and diving teams began the Ohio State Invitational on top as both squads finished day one in the lead. Kathrin Demler (Germany) dominated the competition with two first place finishes and a new team record in the 500 freestyle to help the Buckeye women jump out to a comfortable lead after day one with 752 total points. On the men’s side, the diving trio of Jacob Fielding, Jacob Siler and Lyle Yost swept on the 1 meter springboard and earned 106 team points to propel the Buckeye men to the top of the leaderboard by one point after day one of competition.

SWIMMING FINAL – WOMEN

  • Kathrin Demler finished first in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 4:13.51 during the morning heats. Her swim was good for an Olympic trail cut, her second of the day as she also earned a cut for her 200 IM prelim swim (2:14.18). Nicole Fye finished third in the 400 free (4:16.97) with Molly Kowal rounding out the Buckeyes in the Top 10 as she placed seventh (4:17.92).
  • In the 500 yard freestyle, Kathrin Demler placed first and set a new team record at 4:37.22. She was followed by Kowal who finished third at 4:43.24.
  • In the 200 yard IM final, Kathrin Demler took second (1:56.45), finishing less than a second behind the first place finisher from Kentucky. Katie Trace touched fifth with a time of 1:59.27. In the morning prelims, Trace’s time of 2:16.95 in the 200 IM earned her an Olympic trial cut.
  • Ohio State’s 200 free relay “A” team of Taylor Petrak, Freya Rayner, Rebekah Bradley and Amy Fulmer placed first with a time of 1:29.90.
  • Rebekah Bradley, Hanna Gresser, Trace and Petrak finished second in the 400 yard medley relay (3:35.01).
  • Petrak was the Buckeye’s top finisher in the 50 freestyle, placing fourth with a time of 22.66. Rayner trailed Petrak by .11 seconds and finished fifth.

SWIMMING FINAL – MEN

  • The Ohio State “A” team of Sem Andreis, Cameron Craig, Joe Pohlmann and Paul DeLakis finished second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:18.99. The Buckeye’s “B” team finished fifth (Andrew Loy, Colin McDermott, Matthew Abeysinghe, RJ Kondalski) at 1:20.80.
  • DeLakis touched second in the 200 yard IM (1:45.65), just .58 seconds off the pace of the first place finisher from Kentucky. Daniel Gloude finished fourth in the event at 1:48.23.
  • Sophomore Sem Andreis competed in the A final of the men’s 50 free and placed eighth with a time of 20.21.
  • Ohio State’s “A” 400 yard medley relay team of Kondalski, Jason Mathews, Craig and Loy swam to victory with a time of 3:10.51, earning 80 total points for the Buckeyes. OSU’s “B” team (Thomas Watkins, DeLakis, Noah Lense, Abeysinghe) tied for third with Kentucky at 3:12.20.

DIVING FINAL – WOMEN

  • Ohio State finished one-two in women’s 3 meter diving as Genevieve Angerame took the top spot with a score of 315.50 while freshman Mackenzie Crawford finished second with 303.90 total points. Lexie Barker rounded out the Top 5 finishes for the Buckeyes as she placed fourth with 272.70 points.

 

DIVING FINAL – MEN

  • The Buckeye men swept the podium on the 1 meter springboard with Jacob Fielding finishing first (357.85), Jacob Siler taking second (356.80) and Lyle Yost placing third (355.35).

Up Next

  • Competition resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. for day two preliminary heats. Friday’s schedule will follow day one’s schedule of activities with diving prelims at 1:30 p.m. and swimming finals beginning at 5 p.m.
  • Tomorrow’s events will feature the 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 800 free relay, along with the 1 meter and 3 meter springboard competition.
