Juniors Finalist Summer West of Irvine Novaquatics Verbally Commits to Minnesota

Summer West commits to Univ. of Minnesota

NEW COMMIT: Junior National qualifier Summer West of Huntington Beach, Calif. has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Minnesota beginning in the fall of 2021.

She will suit up for the Golden Gophers as a member of the class of 2025 along with Lyndsey WehrHannah CornishOksana Chaput, and Eliot Kennedy.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m so stoked to announce my commitment to swim and study at the University of Minnesota! I chose Minnesota because of the incredible coaching staff, the close knit team culture, and all of the amazing resources available to the athletes. I’m beyond thankful for my coaches, teammates, family, and friends who helped me along the way to make this decision. I can’t wait to be a Golden Gopher! #SkiUMah”️️️

A talented distance freestyler, West does her club swimming with Irvine Novaquatics and has achieved the Junior National cut in the 1000 free. She most recently finished fourth in the 1000 free, seventh in the 500 free, and eighth in the mile at Carlsbad Sectionals after finishing 16th in the latter event at Juniors West in December.

Last summer, West competed at the Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions and the Los Angeles Invitational. At Mount Hood Futures, she raced to sixth in the 1500m free and ninth in the 800m free en route to achieving best times in both events.

In SCY, her best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:50.92
  • 500 free – 4:53.44
  • 1000 free – 10:02.71
  • 1650 free – 16:53.76

In LCM, her best times include:

  • 200m free – 2:06.36
  • 400m free – 4:25.69
  • 800m free – 9:07.61
  • 1500m free – 17:30.63

A rising senior at Huntington Beach High School, West is a three-time CIF Southern Division 1 Section Championship finalist. She placed sixth in the 500 free and eighth in the 200 free as a sophomore while taking 12th in the latter during her freshman season.

Summer West will add valuable depth to the Golden Gophers’ lineup when she arrives on campus at the start of the 2021-22 season. She’ll join a young but talented training group that will include Katherine Sullivan, Jordan McGinty, Rachel Butler, and Abigail Kilgallon.

West is also the daughter of Brandi West, the Marketing Director for Swimming World and the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
