NEW COMMIT: Junior National qualifier Sophia Frei of Denver, Colorado, will make her way to the East Coast in Fall 2023 after verbally committing to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She will join Lucy Walker, Michaela Chokureva, Maren Conze and Ava Muzzy as a member of the Tar Heels’ Class of 2027.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am so grateful for my coaches, family, and friends for their endless support in helping me accomplish this! GO TAR HEELS ??”

Primarily a backstroker, Frei does her club swimming with University of Denver Hilltoppers and most recently earned a best time in the 200m back at Junior Nationals. Back in March, she earned six best times at Austin Sectionals where she finished fourth in the 200 back, eighth in the 200 IM and ninth in the 100 back.

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 26.04
  • 100 back – 54.58
  • 200 back – 1:56.67
  • 200 IM – 2:04.34
  • About to enter her senior year of high school, Frei placed 15th in the 100 back at the 2021 Colorado 5A State Championships.

Frei is a great pickup for the Tar Heels as she’ll arrive in Chapel Hill following the departure of All-America backstroke Grace Countie. Frei would’ve been UNC’s third-fastest 200 backstroker last season and would’ve scored in the B-final of that event at the 2022 ACC Championships.
