ISL Semifinal 2 Day 2: Lilly King Wins Skins; Caeleb Dressel’s World Record Leads Cali Condors to Victory

The second semi final of the International Swimming League (ISL) continues from Budapest with the Cali Condors and LA Current renewed their rivalry on Sunday with spots in next week’s final four (joining Energy Standard and the London Roar) on the line. The Toronto Titans and Team Iron are also in this match and will look to spoil the party on the second day.

Caeleb Dressel broke the American record in the 100 free, then did even better in the 100 IM, breaking the world record, before setting another American record in the 50 fly. He was the match MVP with 91 points.

Women’s 100 Freestyle

The LA Current made a statement to open the second day of the second ISL semifinal as Beryl Gastaldello and Abbey Weitzeil went 1-2 in the 100 freestyle to kick off the session.

Gastaldello finished in 51.38 and Weitzeil was second in 52.08.

Cali’s Natalie Hinds was third, followed by Team Iron’s Ranomi Kromowidjojo.

Men’s 100 Freestyle

Cali’s Caeleb Dressel made a strong start to the men’s second day. Dressel crushed the field to win in 45.20, an American record. His final turn put him nearly a body length ahead of the field down the stretch, stunning in a 100 free.

Teammate Justin Ress was second, followed by LA’s Maxime Rooney.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Cali Condors’ Hali Flickinger opened up a big lead after the first 100 in the 200 butterfly and was able to hold off the rest of the field to win the event.

Flickinger was more than two seconds ahead of the field at the 150 mark and touched the wall in 2:04.25, finishing nearly three seconds ahead of the field.

“That is all that matters here (getting first). It is infectious. Once you see (a teammate win), you want to do the same,” Flickinger said in the post-race interview.

LA’s Helena Gasson was second, followed by Cali’s Kelsi Dahlia.

Men’s 200 Butterfly

LA Current’s Tom Shields continued the streak of elite swimming on Day 2, breaking the American record in the 200 butterfly.

Shields won the event in 1:49.02 to hold off Cali’s Eddie Wang, who was just .87 second behind.

Cali’s Gunnar Bentz was third.

Women’s 100 Backstroke

Cali Condors Olivia Smoliga continued her dominance in the backstrokes, winning the 100 back in 55.99 to hold off a strong charge from Toronto’s Kylie Masse.

Masse took second, just a tenth behind Smoliga.

“It is always great to score points for Cali, get our hands on the fall first,” Smoliga said. “I knew it was going to be a tight one. I love racing Kylie.”

LA’s Ali DeLoof was third and teammate Aly Tetzloff was fourth.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

Team Iron’s Robert Glinta won the men’s 100 backstroke in 49.64 to hold off Cali’s Coleman Stewart, who made a late move, by just two hundredths of a second with his own late surge in the final meters.

LA’s Ryan Murphy and Team Iron’s Guilherme Basseto each tied for third place.

Women’s 100 IM

LA went 1-2 in the 100 IM as Beryl Gastaldello won her second event of the day, finishing in 57.86.

“It is a big day. It is hard when you go a best time (a few times), it is hard to keep that going,” Gastaldello said.

Teammate Anastasia Gorbenko was second to hold off Cali’s Beata Nelson.

Men’s 100 IM

Cali’s Caeleb Dressel continued his dominance in just about anything he swims. Dressel broke the world record in the 100 IM in 49.88 to win the event for the Condors.

“The best swimmer on the planet,” Rowdy Gaines said on the broadcast.

Teammate Marcin Cieslak was second and everyone else in the field got their times jackpotted by Dressel.

It was a huge point swing for the Condors.

Women’s 200 Free

Cali’s Allison Schmitt con the 200 free, holding off Toronto’s Rebecca Smith in the final meters to get her hand on the wall first.

Schmitt finished in 1:52.83, 16 hundredths ahead of Smith.

“I couldn’t see anyone. I knew I just had to come home strong,” Schmitt said. “I knew it would be a close race, so I was just charging for the wall.”

LA’s Andi Murez was third.

Men’s 200 Free

Cali’s Townley Haas won the 200 free in 1:42.00 to lead a 1-2 Condors finish.

Teammate Kacper Majchrzak was second to finish ahead of LA’s Fernando Scheffer by a hundredth of a second.

Women’s 50 Fly

Team Iron’s Melanie Henique took the win in the 50 fly in 24.65 from lane 1, leading a 1-2 Iron finish.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo was second to hold off LA’s Beryl Gastaldello and Alyssa Marsh.

Men’s 50 Fly

Team Iron’s Nicholas Santos won the 50 fly in 21.80 to hold off Cali’s Caeleb Dressel by 24 hundredths of a second. His time was just five hundredths off the world record. Dressel’s was an American record.

Cali’s Marcin Cieslak was third ahead of LA’s Tom Shields.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Cali’s Lilly King has not been beaten in the 100 breaststroke going 8-for-8 coming into the semifinal. She won again in 1:03.29 on Monday.

It was another 1-2 finish for the Condors as Molly Hannis finished second, just more than a second behind King, followed by Team Iron’s Ida Hulkko.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Team Iron’s Emre Sakci won the men’s 100 breaststroke in 56.51 as two LA Current swimmers were charging.

LA’s Will Licon was second, followed by Felipe Silva Franca, who were each just over a half second back.

Mixed 4×100 Freestyle Relay

The Cali Condors came in the favorite for the mixed free relay. They won, but it wasn’t easy.

Justin Ress, Caeleb Dressel, Olivia Smoliga and Erika Brown finished in 3:14.96.

Maxime Rooney gave LA the early lead with a 45.86 split to lead off and a strong anchor leg by Abbey Weitzeil made the relay extremely close.

But Brown had a good final wall and was able to hold on, with the Current finishing 66 hundredths behind.

Women’s 400 IM

Cali’s Hali Flickinger built a big lead in the 400 IM, which narrowed during the breaststroke leg, but had plenty in the tank to take her second victory of the day.

Flickinger finished in 4:27.07 to hold off Toronto’s Tessa Cieplucha. It was Flickinger’s best time by nearly two seconds.

“It felt good. Nothing special, but I wanted to do it for the team,” Flickinger said. “I knew people were going to be catching me so I have to have enough of a lead. Hopefully, I can get that breaststroke a little stronger.”

LA’s Helena Gasson was third.

Men’s 400 IM

Team Iron’s Leonardo Santos followed Flickinger’s performance with a similar wire-to-wire win in the 400 IM. He finished in 4:04.16.

Cali’s Mark Szaranek was second, about a second behind, but a second ahead of third-place David Verraszto of Team Iron.
