The International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday that comments about women made by Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro Mori were “absolutely inappropriate”.

Mori has been subject to intense criticism since saying last week in a meeting of the Japanese Olympic Committee that meetings with female participants take a long time and that they talk too much, driven by a “strong sense of rivalry.”

He later apologised and retracted his comments while also attempting to justify them, inviting further criticism.

According to the IOC, the Tokyo Games organising committee also described Mori’s comments as inappropriate with broadcaster NHK reporting that TOCOG will convene a special board meeting as early as Friday.

About 440 Games volunteers have quit and local organisers have received more than 5,500 complaints.

Now the IOC has released a statement which reads:

“The recent comments of Tokyo 2020 President Mori were absolutely inappropriate and in contradiction to the IOC’s commitments and the reforms of its Olympic Agenda 2020.

“Besides Mr. Mori’s apology, the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee also considers his comment to be inappropriate and has reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality.

“As the leader of the Olympic Movement, we are committed to our mission to encourage and support the promotion of women in sport at all levels and in all structures, as stated in the Olympic Charter.”

The controversy adds more turbulence to the delayed Tokyo Olympics which are due to start in 164 days but with speculation swirling as to whether they will go ahead because of the pandemic.
