The field for next month’s World Championships in Budapest was further weakened on Wednesday, when two-time Olympic champion Adam Peaty revealed he suffered a broken bone in his right foot. The injury will prevent Peaty from chasing fourth consecutive world titles in the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke at Duna Arena, where he would have been a heavy favorite.

Peaty is simply the latest superstar to announce his absence from the World Champs, although his medical reason differs from other standouts who will not be in Budapest. A number of athletes, notably Australians Emma McKeon and Kyle Chalmers, have opted to place their focus on the Commonwealth Games, which are scheduled for Birmingham from late July into early August.

At last summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, gold medals were awarded in 28 individual events – 14 for each gender. Here is a look at the reigning Olympic champions who will not compete at the World Championships, and the reason for their absence. More female champions will be missing than men’s titlists.

Note: Canadian Maggie Mac Neil, the Olympic champ in the 100 butterfly, has decided to skip individual events, but will contribute to her country’s relays.

Let’s get back to World and European Championships every fourth year, this is killing the sport. A World Championship in swimming crazy Budapest deserves the best athletes in their best form. Who cares if Dressel has 8 or 12 gold medals when he retires – who is even counting? It’s just another meet. And luckily for the Europeans there is a meet in Rome in August. Thank you FINA and LEN for ruining the interest for swimming. More is not always better, sometimes less is better.
