Indiana Men Take Down Michigan in Top-10 Showdown at Tri-Meet

Indiana and Michigan made their return to the pool in a top-10 showdown, with the ninth-ranked Hoosiers men’s team edging No. 7 Michigan, 173-127, Saturday in Bloomington.

The meet came in a tri-meet with Northwestern; of the six squads, five are ranked in the top 25. Indiana and Michigan each ended up with three total wins, the Hoosiers’ men and Michigan women sweeping.

RESULTS

On the men’s side, Indiana benefitted from a pair of double-winners in the pool. Jack Franzman won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, both in NCAA B cut times (19.69 and 43.52, respectively), both over Michigan’s Gus Borges (with a 19.70 B cut in the 50). Franzman also swam on the winning 400 free relay.

Brendan Burns picked up wins in the 200 butterfly (B cut of 1:44.30) ahead of teammate Corey Gambardella, and the 100 fly (B cut of 47.28). Burns added a B cut in the 200 backstroke at 1:44.94 for third place. (Second in that race, in a B-cut of 1:44.71, was 100 back champ Jacob Steele, with a B cut of 47.38.)

Tomer Frankel won the 200 free for Indiana to go with a relay win. Michael Brinegar and Mikey Calvillo went 1-2 in the 1,000 free, then switched places for the 500. Diver Andrew Capobianco swept the diving events, a 1-2 finish in the one-meter with teammate Mory Gould.

Michigan’s men were led by Wyatt Davis, who won the 200 back in a B-cut time of 1:43.95 and swam on the victorious medley relay. He added a B cut in the 100 back for second place and silver in the 200 individual medley behind teammate Jared Daigle. Will Chan won the 100 breast in a B cut of 53.99 for the Wolverines, and AJ Bornstein won the 200 breast.

On the women’s side, Michigan’s Daria Pyshnenko was a winner in all four of her swims. She took part in the 400 free relay and 200 medley relay, augmenting victories in 50 free (B cut of 22.67) and 100 free. Maggie MacNeil, who joined her on the relays, captured the 200 free in B-cut fashion (1:47.00). Olivia Carter bested the field in the 200 fly (B cut of 1:56.85), 100 fly (B cut of 53.66) and 200 IM.

Sierra Schmidt and Kaitlyn Sims were 1-2 in both distance events for Michigan, while Casey Chung and Mariella Venter traded 1-2 results in the 100 back and 200 back.

Indiana’s only women’s swimming win was supplied by Noelle Peplowski, who led teammate Emily Weiss into the wall in the 200 breast, both in B cuts. Indiana won both diving events courtesy of Anne Fowler.

Northwestern’s lone win came via Sophie Angus, who claimed the women’s 100 breast in a B cut of 1:00.68, outtouching Weiss (1:00.80) and Peplowski (1:00.99), also in B-cut times. Angus was also third in the 200 breast and swam on the Wildcats’ 200 medley relay that finished second, teaming with Miriam Guevara (second in the 200 fly, third in the 100 fly), Maddie Smith (third in the 50 and 100 free) and Selen Ozbilen.

Jaye Patrick was second in the one-meter diving ahead of Markie Hopkins, who took second in the three-meter event.

Northwestern’s best men’s result was second place in the 200 breast via Marcus Mok. Connor Lamastra was third in the 200 fly.
