NEW COMMIT: Boise, Idaho native Gabe Machado has announced his verbal commitment to Stanford University and will suit up for the Cardinal at the start of the 2021-22 season.

He told Swimming World:

“I am very excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at Stanford University. It has been a childhood dream of mine to attend this school and I can’t believe that it is coming true. Since I first stepped on campus I knew this was the place for me. I would like to thank my friends, teammates, coaches, and especially my family for getting me to where I am today. I can’t wait to join this awesome team and community. #GoCard#FeartheTree”

Primarily a distance freestyler and backstroker, Machado does his club swimming with Boise YMCA Swim Team under head coach Todd Marsh and owns several U.S. Open and Junior National cuts. He finished 10th in the 200 back at Juniors West in December where he earned four best times and most recently registered eight top-5 finishes at the Washington Open.

At YMCA Nationals in April 2019, Machado collected the bronze medal in the mile and took 12th in the 200 back. Last summer, he had five top-18 showings at Mount Hood Sectionals before going on to achieve 100% best times at Junior Nationals.

His best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:30.59
  • 1000 free – 9:19.42
  • 1650 free – 15:32.54
  • 100 back – 49.67
  • 200 back – 1:45.28
  • 400 IM – 3:57.22

Also competing for Bishop Kelly High School, Machado is a six-time Idaho 4A State Championship finalist. The two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American won the 100 back and 500 free during his sophomore and junior seasons, and is the owner of the state record in both events. As a junior, Machado led his team to the championship title while also swimming on the state-record setting 4×50 medley and 4×100 free relays.
