Group of Seven Countries Unanimously Support Olympic Games Being Held

Yoshihide Suga, the Prime Minister of Japan, announced on Friday that he has received support from all members of the Group of Seven in regard to holding the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer. The Group of Seven consists of the United States, Japan, Germany, Canada, France, the United Kingdom and Italy, and it unanimously backed moving forward with the Olympics in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic that has wreaked havoc on the world.

“I told the meeting that I want to realize a safe and secure Olympics as testimony that human beings will have won the battle with the Coronavirus,” Suga said. “I was able to gain support from all the leaders. It was so encouraging.”

In recent polls, the majority of Japanese citizens have indicated a desire for the Olympic Games in Tokyo to be postponed for a second time, or canceled. The Games were originally slated for last summer, but COVID-19 called for a one-year delay. This week, Japan started its nationwide vaccine process.

If the Olympic Games are held in Tokyo in a few months, there will be differences from past Games. Notably, athletes will be required to leave the Olympic Village within two days after the completion of their sport.
