Georgia Invite Day 1: Bulldogs Put Together NCAA’s Fastest 200 Free Relay

The Georgia Invite saw some fast racing on its opening day.

The Georgia men put together a fast 200 freestyle relay. Dillion Downing, Javier Acevedo, Camden Murphy and Luca Urlando finished in 1:16.35.

The Bulldogs were nearly two seconds ahead of the rest of the field and have the fastest time in the NCAA so far this season. The time was an NCAA automatic qualification and a Georgia school record.

Georgia Tech’s Christian Ferraro, Austin Daniel, Kyle Barone and Caio Pumputis took second in 1:18.23.

The Georgia women also won the 200 free relay as Maxine Parker, Gabi Fa’Amausili, Zoie Hartman and Danielle Della Torre finished in 1:29.15.

Florida State’s Zsofia Kurdi, Jenny Halden, Rebecca Moynihan and Kertu Alnek took second in 1:29.54.

In the women’s 500 free, five swimmers reached NCAA provisional cuts.

Georgia’s Courtney Harnish won the race in 4:36.86, going 1-2-3-4 with teammates Olivia Anderson (4:42.03), Maddie Homovich (4:42.94) and Jillian Barczyk (4:44.10). Florida State’s Phoebe Griffiths was fifth (4:46.16).

In the men’s 500 free, 12 competitors achieved NCAA “B” cuts.

Georgia’s Jake Magahey won the event in 4:10.48, six seconds ahead of the field and the second-fastest time in school history.

Florida State’s Aziz Ghaffari was second in 4:16.59, followed by Georgia’s Greg Reed (4:17.02) and Andrew Abruzzo (4:18.53) and Georgia Tech’s Clark Wakeland (4:18.81).

In the women’s 200 IM, the Bulldogs had a 1-7 finish, led by “B” cuts from Zoie Hartman (1:54.25), Della Torre (1:55.84), Callie Dickinson (1:57.74), Portia Brown (1:58.28) and Sammie Burchill (1:59.58).

In the men’s 200 IM, Acevedo won in 1:41.75 to hold off Pumputis (1:41.90).

Urlando was third (1:42.84), followed by Georgia’s Jack Dalmolin (1:45.24) and Zach Hils (1:45.24), all in “B” cuts.

Fa’Amausili won the 50 free in 22.08, going 1-2 with Parker (22.24).

Florida State’s Halden (22.56) and Alnek (22.76) followed, also in NCAA “B” cuts.

In the men’s 50 free, Downing (19.44) and Murphy (19.67) went 1-2 for the Bulldogs at the Georgia Invite.

Florida State’s Peter Varjasi was third (19.75), followed by Barone (19.77) and Ferraro (19.92), in “B” cuts, capping the Georgia Invite Day 1 individual events.

In the women’s 400 medley relay, Fa’Amausili, Hartman, Harnish and Parker won in an NCAA “A” cut time of 3:31.56.

In the men’s 400 medley relay, it was Georgia Tech’s Barone, Pumputis, Ferraro and Darren Lim, who won in an “A” cut 3:05.89.

Acevedo, Dalmolin, Murphy and Downing took second with a “B”cut 3:06.40.
