FINA has announced the re-scheduling of the FINA Diving World Cup for the new dates of May 1-6, 2021. The competition will take place in Tokyo, as originally planned, and will serve as both a qualification and test event for the Olympic Games, taking place from July 23-August 8, 2021 in the Japanese capital.

This decision follows confirmation of the detailed procedures for entry and local hosting arrangements in place for the event in Japan during the month of May for all delegations taking part in the event.

Concerning the organization of the Artistic Swimming Olympic Qualification Tournament, originally planned to take place from May 1-4, 2021 in Tokyo, FINA and its counterparts are still reviewing the staging of this event and a decision will be made in the days to come.

Finally, related to the Marathon Swim Olympic Qualifier, programmed for Fukuoka (JPN), on May 29-30, FINA, in agreement with the Japanese hosts, has decided to re-allocate this event. Following the prompt interest and availability from the Portuguese Swimming Federation, the competition will now take place in Setubal (Portugal), on June 19-20, 2021. This location has also previously been the venue for this Olympic qualification event in 2012 and 2016.

For each of these Olympic qualifying events, a fair competition environment is of the utmost importance. They are also critical for optimal preparations for the Olympic Games. All parties ask the athletes and officials devoted to qualifying for the Games for their generous understanding of this necessity. The Government of Japan, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and local governments across Japan continue to work together to jointly address the COVID-19 situation and ensure the safety and security of all competitors.

FINA takes the opportunity to express its gratitude to the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, Japanese Government and the IOC for their commitment to confirming the arrangements for the events and once more reiterates its confidence on a very successful staging of the Olympic Games this summer in Tokyo. The Japanese side is grateful for FINA’s confidence and looks forward to working together to deliver safe, secure and fair Olympic qualification events in the lead-up to this summer’s Games.
