Dong Zhihao Beats 200 Breast World Junior Record at Chinese Spring Champs; Wang Changhao Lowers National Record

On the fifth day of China’s Spring Championships, veteran Qin Haiyang produced a swim in the 200 breaststroke that would have earned him a silver medal at last year’s World Championships, but in the same race, the 23-year-old lost one of his records from six years ago.

Qin won the race in 2:07.60, much faster than the 2:08.38 that Japan’s Yu Hanaguruma and Sweden’s Erik Persson swam to share silver last year in Budapest, but behind him, Dong Zhihao swam a mark of 2:08.83 to beat Qin’s world junior record set in 2017. Previously, Qin swam a time of 2:09.39 in prelims at the 2017 World Championships at 2:09.39.

Meanwhile, Wang Changhao swam a Chinese national record in the 50 butterfly, following up his 51.45 in Wednesday’s 100 fly with a time of 23.25 in the one-lap race. He won a close race against Chen Juner (23.40) and Sun Jiajun (23.43). The last men’s race of the day, the 800 freestyle, went to Fei Liwei in 7:54.37.

Zhang Yufei, fresh off a 56.58 performance in Wednesday’s 100 fly, scored the win in the women’s 50 free in 24.40, while Ye Shiwen, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the 400 IM and 200 IM, captured first place in the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.01. Ye, now 27, last won international medals in 2019.
