Deaflympics Concludes With Stellar Medal Count From United States, Ukraine, Italy

The Deaflympics in Brazil concluded with many strong performances and gold medals won by several countries.

There are a plethora of sports at the Deaflympics, including swimming. Early on in the meet, the U.S. and Ukraine had strong performances on Day 1-3.

That success continued on Day 4 as the Ukraine went 1-2 in the men’s 100 breaststroke. Oleksii Kolomiiets winning gold in 1:05.67, followed by compatriot Vladyslav Hrystenko (1:07.57). Matthew Klotz of the U.S. won the bronze (1:07.76).

In the women’s 200 butterfly, Carli Cronk won the gold in 2:18.40, follows by Ukraine’s Anita Makhnyk (2:31.72) and Hungary’s Orsolya Zsilinski (2:43.14).

The men’s 200 butterfly saw Japan’s Ryutaro Ibara claim gold in 56.18, Poland’s Konrad Powroznik took the silver in 56.60 and Klotz won the bronze (56.91).

Latvia’s Zane Embrekte earned the gold medal in the women’s 50 freestyle (26.62). Italy’s Sara Maragno took the silver (27.85) and Brooke Thompson on the U.S. earned the bronze (27.981).

The U.S. won the 800 free relay with Emily Massengale, Kaitlyn Wewatherby, Brooke Thompson and Carli Cronk touching the wall in 8:59.55. The Ukraine took silver (9:04.86), followed by Italy (9:06.43).

On Day 5 of the Deaflympics, Japan’s Satoi Fujihara won gold in the 1500 free (16:21.69), ahead of Italy’s Federico Tamborrino (16:29.60) and Germany’s Mueller Niklas (17:01.54).

Klotz won the 100 backstroke (56.52) ahead of Germany’s Lars Kochmann (58.21) and Ukraine’s Vladyslav Kremliakov (58.34).

Poland’s Klaudia Jarzewicz claimed gold in the 50 backstroke (32.18), ahead of Massengale (32.21) and Thompson (33.27).

Ibara won the 200 IM (2:07.90) ahead of Powroznik (2:10.22) and Collin Davis of the U.S. (2:14.98).

• Results

Davis, Thompson, Cronk and Klotz earned gold in the mixed 400 free relay (3:45.90). Ukraine took the silver (3:47.87) and Poland claimed bronze (3:52.85).

On Day 6 of the Deaflympics, Poland’s Julia Dragan won the women’s 800 free (9:26.27). Itally went 2-3 with Noemi Canino (9:38.12) and Jessica Diddoro (9:39.95).

Kolomiiets won the 200 breaststroke (2:24.65) ahead of Hrystenko (2:26.48) and Daniel Pletenets of the U.S. (2:31.74).

Embrekte won the 100 freestyle (57.82) ahead of Maragno (1:00.48) and Thompson (1:00.67).

Ibara won the 200 freestyle (1:54.82) ahead of Fujihara (1:55.22) and Brazil’s Guilherme Kabbach (1:56.31).

On Day 7 of the Deaflympics, Massengale, Weatherby, Cronk and Thompson won the 400 medley relay (4:31.31) aread of the Ukraine (4:26.05) and Poland (4:39.29).

Cronk (2:22.04) and Massengale (2:31.63) went 1-2 in the 200 backstroke with Jarzewicz taking the bronze (2:34.75).

Klotz won the 50 backstroke (26.33) ahead of Kochmann (26.76) and Kremliakov (27.19).

Ukraine’s Iryna Tereshchenko claimed gold in the women’s 100 breaststroke (1:15.42) ahead of Italy’s Gaia Maragno (1:16.79) and Poland’s Julia Chmielewska (1:16.90).

Ukraine’s Vladyslav Adamovych, Artem Karnysh, Ivan Zinenko and Maksym Dudnyk won the men’s 800 free relay (8:02.72) ahead of Poland ( 8:09.24) and the U.S. (8:12.45).

On Day 8 of the Deaflympics, Cronk won the 400 free (4:29.19) ahead of Dragan (435.53) and Canino (4:40.83).

Powroznik won the 200 butterfly (2:08.05), ahead of Argentina’s Emanuel Llanos (2:10.81) and Ukraine’s Rotyslav Yakubovskyi (2:12.36).

Italy’s Sara Maragno won the 50 butterfly (29.08) ahead of Tarasenko (30.02) and Tereshchenko (30.14).

Klotz won the men’s 50 free (23.45) ahead of Ukraine’s Illia Sultanov (23.73) and Kochmann (24.68).

The U.S. capped the Deaflympics with a gold medal in the mixed 400 medley relay. Klotz, Pletenets, Cronk and Thompson won in 4:08.49 ahead of Ukraine (4:11.20) and Poland (4:17.92).
