Daniel Diehl, Anna Moesch Highlight Field at YMCA Nationals Next Week (Psych Sheet)

A pair of gold medalists from last summer’s Junior Pan Pacific Championships are among the swimmers entered in the YMCA Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., running from April 3 through April 7. Daniel Diehl, the gold medalist in the 100 backstroke at the junior-level showcase last summer in Hawaii, highlights the men’s competition as the top seed in three events while Anna Moesch, who won 50 freestyle silver and a pair of relay gold medals in August, also owns the top spot in three different races.

The full psych sheet for the meet is available here.

Diehl, who was a finalist in the 100-meter back at the U.S. International Team Trials in the same Greensboro pool last April, is expected to dominate both backstroke events as well as the 200 IM, and he will also race the 100 free. Diehl also won five events at the long course edition of YMCA Nationals last summer, and last weekend, he posted strong times in long course at Indianapolis Sectionals.

Moesch, a future Virginia Cavalier, won the 50, 100 and 200 free last year, and at the long course meet, she placed first in the long course equivalents of those events plus the 400-meter IM. Also seeded first in three events on the women’s side is Leah Shackley, who will highlight the 200 back, 100 butterfly and 100 back after impressive performances in early March that included a 50.83 100 back that would have been A-final-worthy at the recent NCAA Championships. Ava Sutphin (1000 free and 1650 free) and Emily Thompson (400 IM and 200 IM) are other multi-event top seeds.

Brendon Whitfield enters with the top time in the 50, 100 and 200 free, while David King is first in the 500 and 1650-yard races and Isaac Fleig leads the way in the 1000 free and 400 IM. Roman Jones ranks second behind Whitfield in all three shorter freestyle races, and Jones is also the favorite in the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke.
