Commonwealth Games: Maisie Summers-Newton Adds Gold to Stellar Summer

Maisie Summers-Newton was one of the standouts of this summer’s World Paraswimming Championships in Madeira, Portugal. Not far from her home in Northamptonshire, she celebrated her 20th birthday last week by adding another piece of hardware Monday.

Summers-Newton followed up her three golds at worlds with her first Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham, England, winning the women’s SB6 100 breaststroke.

Matthew Levy claimed another gold medal for Australia on Monday, winning a thrilling event in 28.95. He was just .15 up on Wei Soong Toh of Singapore, who grabbed silver in 28.95.

Levy’s time was .35 second shy of the Commonwealth Games record he set in Gold Coast in 2018 in repeating as champ in the event. The 35-year-old also owns nine Paralympic medals (three gold) dating back to the 2008 Beijing Games.

The silver medal went to South Africa’s Christian Sadie, who was the only other swimmer under 30 seconds in 29.78.

Women’s SB6 100 breaststroke

Just barely 20 years of age, Maisie Summers-Newton has accomplished plenty, to which she can add a Commonwealth Games medal. The SB6 100 breast is one of her specialties, one of the three events she won gold in at the Madeira Worlds this summer after earning silver in the 2019 edition. She’s also the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the event (and the SM6 200 individual medley).

Monday, Summers-Newton swam like that kind of world-beater. She won the event in 1:32.72, more than 10 seconds clear of the field. Grace Harvey, an SB5 swimmer, made it an England 1-2 in grabbing silver. Camille Berube of Canada secured the bronze medal.

Women’s S8 100 backstroke

Alice Tai backed her world-record credentials by swimming away with gold in the S8 100 back. She bested the field with a time of 1:13.64, more than five seconds back of the world record she set in 2019 but four seconds up on the chasing pack Sunday.

The 23-year-old won the S9 100 back and earned silver in the S9 100 free at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She won one silver medal, in the S8 100 free, at the 2022 World Championships.

Tai was comprehensively ahead of the field. Tupou Neiufi earned silver in 1:17.91 for New Zealand. Lilly Rice got on the podium for Wales with bronze.

Australia’s Timothy Hodge came within seventh hundredths of a second from his second gold medal of these Commonwealth Games Sunday. But New Zealand’s Joshua Wilmer forced him to settle for silver.

Wilmer clocked in at 1:14.12, with Hodge fractionally behind in 1:14.19. Hodge won the S9 100 backstroke earlier in the week.

Third place went to Australia’s Blake Cochrane, an SB7 swimmer. He came within .22 seconds of his Games record in the event, set in 2018.
