Cincinnati Seven Hills, Gates Mills Hawken Win Ohio Division 2 2016 State Championship

The Ohio Division II Swimming Championships finals took place this evening at the CT Branin Natatorium in Canton, OH and it was a showcase of fast swims and good races.

200 Medley Relay

The champion in the girls’ event was the team of Claire Doerr (26.46), Crile Hart (28.63), Lauren Heller (25.47), and Heather Svitavsky (23.71) of Gates Mills Hawken with a final time of 1:44.27, over a second and a half faster than their seed coming into the event. Second place went to the Cincinnati Mariemont team of Sadie DeCamp (27.19), Leah Dupre (29.10), Brooke Woellert (25.47), and Lainey Newman (24.20), who touched at a 1:45.96. The Columbus School for Girls was third (1:46.81) with a team of McKayla Moffat (26.69), Alicia Donley (29.99), Eleanor Smith (26.05), and Annie Moosavian (24.08).

The Cincinnati Seven Hills team of Matthew Marquardt (22.82), Tindar Cyr (26.79), Tim Hagemeister (22.34), and Greg Kalin (20.97), claimed the title in the boys’ race with a final time of 1:32.92. They were followed in second place by the Gahanna Columbus Academy team of Jacob Eismann (24.60), Nate Goldfarb (25.69), Max Dreisbach (23.31), and Dylan Warren (21.99) with a 1:35.59. Third place went to Gates Mills Hawken (1:35.96), a team of David Bates (25.04), Sami Fares (26.53), Zeb Hart (22.87), and Josh Roselli (21.52).

200 Freestyle

Gates Mills Hawken’s Lauren Heller put on a show for the crowd as she won the 200 free with a time of 1:48.97, over a second and a half ahead of her teammate Claire Doerr, who finished second (1:50.51). Lucy Callard of Cincinnati Seven Hills was third with a 1:50.76, just behind Doerr.

Another impressive swim came from Bellbrook’s Cody Bybee, who was the only swimmer under 1:40 in the final. In fact, he was way under the barrier with a final time of 1:36.75. Second place went to Carson Burt of Cincinnati Wyoming (1:40.17) and third place was claimed by Cincinnati Madeira’s Chet Dobson (1:41.90).

200 IM

The final of the 200 IM nearly saw Gates Mills Hawken’s Crile Hart go under the 2:00 barrier, but she was about a half second off with a final time of 2:00.49, which was still almost two seconds faster than what she posted in prelims. A distant second was Peyton Keiner of Fairfield Cincinnati Christian with a time of 2:06.44. Third was Portia Del Rio Brown of Gates Mills Hawken (2:06.94).

The boys’ race was much closer than the girls’–first place was claimed by Xenia Christian’s Eric Knowles with a 1:50.38. Cincinnati Seven Hills’ Tim Hagemeister was second with a 1:51.46, followed by Jason Quinn of Chagrin Falls.

50 Freestyle

Miranda Donley of the Columbus School for Girls claimed the title in the 50 free with a 23.12. She was followed by Cincinnati Indian Hill’s Devin Landstra (23.44) for second, while Maggie Cha from Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown was third with a 23.83.

Tipp City Tippecanoe’s Elias Jay Bell was the boys’ champion in the 50 with a time of 20.82. Cincinnati Madeira’s Alex Fortman was second with a 21.18, just out touching Sklyer Tavenner of Lewistown Indian Lake, who was third with a 21.19.

100 Butterfly

The winner in the girls’ event was Lauren Olson from Middletown Bishop Fenwick with a 54.95, the only time in the field under 55. Second went to Cleves Taylor’s Isabelle Murray (55.08), while Miranda Donley completed a difficult double with the 50 and placed third with a 55.87.

Cody Bybee took his second title of the night with a win in the 100 fly (48.79). His swim tonight was over a second and a half faster than his prelims swim and nearly a second ahead of second place finisher Matthew Marquardt from Cincinnati Seven Hills (49.52). Colin MacMillan from Bay placed third with a 51.27, jumping four places from seventh seed.

100 Freestyle

McKayla Moffat from the Columbus School for girls thwarted Lauren Heller’s attempt for two individual titles when she won the 100 free with a 50.74, just over two tenths ahead of Heller, who was second with a 50.97. Olivia Chick from Yellow Springs was third with a 51.57.

Alex Fortman grabbed the title in the boys’ race with a 45.66, the only swimmer in the field under 46. Dominic Harry of Dayton Carroll was second with a 46.14, four one-hundredths ahead of Cincinnati Wyoming’s Carson Burt, who rounded out the top three with a 46.18.

500 Freestyle

The girls’ 500 proved to be a battle to the finish between Lucy Callard of Cincinnati Seven Hills and Claire Doerr of Gates Mills Hawkens. Callard out touched Doerr to win the event with a 4:51.31, while Doerr finished in 4:51.55. A distant third place went to Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown’s Julia Armitage (4:58.09).

The boys’ race proved to be the same, with a dogfight between Xenia Christian’s Eric Knowles and Jason Quinn of Chagrin Falls. Knowles claimed the victory with a 4:31.26, while Quinn touched right behind with a 4:31.37. Cincinnati Seven Hills’ Tim Hagemeister was third with a 4:33.23.

200 Freestyle Relay

The Columbus School for Girls team of Annie Moosavian (24.66), Eleanor Smith (24.38), Alicia Donley (23.84), and Miranda Donley (22.82) claimed the title in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:35.70, a second faster than what they posted in the prelims. Second place went to Cincinnati Mariemont (1:36.15) by Leah Dupre (25.03), Cora Dupre (23.38), Lainey Newman (23.89), and Rachel Munschauer (23.85). Gates Mills Hawken was third–a team of Spencer Crawford (24.94), Portia Del Rio Brown (24.26), Summer Svitavsky (24.64), and Audrey Dietz (24.24) finished with a time of 1:38.08.

A team of Philip Brocker (22.66), Connor Williams (21.75), Christopher Rutter (20.95), and Carson Burt (20.94) won the boys’ race for Cincinnati Wyoming with a time of 1:26.30. Second place went to the Lima Shawnee team of Cobie Mikesell (22.08), Jacob Magula (21.08), Noah curl (21.63), and Chris Soules (21.98) with a 1:26.77. Hunting Valley University School was third with a time of 1:27.23 by a team of Zach Halawa (22.44), Charlie Stewart Bates (22.15), Sam Darwish (21.62), and David Motch (21.02).

100 Backstroke

Fairfield Cincinnati Christian’s Payton Keiner claimed an individual title with a win a convincing win in the 100 back. Her 54.59 was more than a second ahead of second place finisher Devin Landstra from Cincinnati Indian Hills (55.84). Claire Golba of Kettering Archbishop Alter was third by four one-hundredths (55.88).

Matthew Marquardt made quite a statement in the 100 back–his 48.78 was not only the only sub-50 of the field, but it was over two second faster than the second place finisher John Sampson of Bellbrook (50.92). Hunting Valley University School’s Scott Bowman was third with a 51.19.

100 Breaststroke

Cincinnati Mariemont’s Leah Dupre won the title in the 100 breast with a 1:03.94, about three tenths ahead of Springfield Shawnee’s Grace Seibert and Gates Mills Hawken’s Crile Hart, who tied for second with a pair of 1:04.20.

It was another tight race for the boys’ 100 breast, with Hudson McDaniel from Ashland touching first with a time of 56.78. Nate Goldfarb of Columbus Academy was a close second (56.89), while Gates Mills Hawken’s Sami Fares touched third with a time of 58.46).

400 Freestyle Relay

The final event of the night went to Gates Mills Hawken with a time of 3:26.10–a team of Crile Hart (51.13), Portia Del Rio Brown (52.24), Claire Doerr (52.00), and Lauren Heller (50.73) touched first. The Columbus School for Girls team of McKayla Moffat (51.38), Annie MOosavian (53.39), Eleanor Smith (53.54), and Miranda Donley (50.43) were second with a time of 3:28.74. Third went to Cincinnati Mariemont with a 3:31.33 by Cora Dupre (52.05), Lainey Newman (54.17), Brooke Woellert (52.56), and Rachel Munschauer (52.55).

The boys’ final event was won my Cincinnati Seven Hill’s team of Henry Marquardt (47.92), Greg Kalin (46.01), Matthew Marquardt (45.59), and Tim Hagemeister (45.65) with a time of 3:05.17. A distant second place went to Alex Fortman (46.34), Chet Dobson (47.69), Jacob Waters (46.72), and Braden Kane (50.43) of Cincinnati Madeira with a 3:11.18. Philip Brocker (49.13), Connor Williams (48.72), Christopher Rutter (47.66), and Carson Burt (46.06) of Cincinnati Wyoming were third with a time of 3:11.57.

Final Scores:

The girls’ meet was won handily by Gates Mills Hawken with a score of 318.5. Cincinnati Mariemont was second with 194.5 and Columbus School for girls was third with 180.

Cincinnati Seven Hills easily took the boys’ meet with 267 points. Second was Gates Mills Hawkens with 188, while Hunting Valley University School was third with 185.
