Chupkov Wins 100m Breaststroke By 0.01 From Prigoda In 59.79 At Russian Swimming Cup

Anton Chupkov won the 100m breaststroke in 59.79 as he stopped the clock 0.01secs ahead of Kirill Prigoda at the Russian Swimming Cup.

Prigoda had taken gold over four lengths on Saturday, touching first in 2:07.58 ahead of the fast-finishing Chupkov.

Roles were reversed in the final session of the meet on Sunday though.

Prigoda is best known for the shorter distances with bronze in the individual 100m at the 2017 World Championships and two trips to the third step of the podium with the Russian men’s medley relay in Budapest and last year in Gwangju.

Chupkov is world-record holder and double world champion over 200m but also holds the Russian 100m record, set at 58.94 at the World Cup in Kazan, Russia, in 2019.

It was 24-year-old Prigoda who was 0.22 ahead at halfway but Chupkov – known for his final-50 speed over 200 – came back to win in 59.79 with Prigoda clocking 59.80

The women’s race was won by Tatiana Belonogoff in 1:07.23.

Belonogoff – who won the 2018 European 50br title while representing Britain – was out in 31.93 – the only sub-32 in the field – and back in 35.30.

Second in 1:07.98 was Eugenia Chikunova, the 15-year-old who took the 200 title on Saturday in 2:22.94, with Maria Temnikova – second over four lengths – coming from sixth at halfway to place third in 1:08.26. Temnikova returned to win the 200IM in 2:14.24.

Andriy Zhilkin was 0.46 off his national record as he won the 200IM in a highly-impressive 1:58.62.

Zhilkin, who won gold with the 4×100 free squad at the 2018 Europeans in Glasgow, set the Russian mark of 1:58.16 in the semis at the 2019 worlds in Gwangju where he was locked out of the final by one place and 0.18.

Splits of 25.89/30.45/33.96/28.32 guided him home ahead of 400IM winner Ilya Borodin who stopped the clock at 2:00.45.

Maria Kameneva pulled out a speedy 59.92 in the 100 back with splits of 29.28 and 30.64 with Daria K Ustinova second in 1:01.25.

Grigory Tarasevich – the 2016 European silver medallist – added the 100m backstroke title to the 50 he won on Saturday in 54.64.

Oleg Kostin won the men’s 50 fly in 23.09 while Arina Surkova took the women’s in 25.97, 24 hours after a scorching 100 fly victory.She also delivered an emphatic win in the women’s dash in 24.67.

Daniil Markov led home a swift men’s 50 free in 22.29 ahead of backstroke specialist Evgeny Rylov (22.38), 100 free winner Andrei Minakov (22.45) and triple 2019 world medallist Vladislav Grinev (22.62).

Alexander Egorov won the men’s 400 free in 3:47.98 with Valeria Salamantina taking the women’s in 4:12.18.
