Cheyenne Mountain Takes Home Colorado Boys 4A Swimming and Diving Title

THORNTON – For the first time since 2002, Cheyenne Mountain High School topped the field at the Colorado Boys 4A Swimming and Diving Championships, amassing 354 points to claim the team title on Saturday night at Veteran’s Memorial Aquatics Center in Thornton.

Led by sophomore Daniel Carr’s two individual state titles and 4A records, the Indians finished ahead of three-time defending champion Air Academy, who scored 319.5 points to finish second. Thompson Valley (199 points), Silver Creek (180 points) and D’Evelyn (163.5 points) rounded out the top five teams.

Air Academy got the meet off to a record-breaking start in the 200 medley relay as Hunter Doerr, Michael Loyd, Caleb Hicks and Jack Dangremond lowered their own 4A state record of 1:33.65 from prelims with a 1:32.90. They finished comfortably ahead of Cheyenne Mountain’s Jerry Birnbaum, Daniel Carr, Brayden Love and Kaiden Kimball, who touched in 1:34.49. D’Evelyn’s Alexander Moreland, Daniel Graber, Se Cheong and Alec Sutton wrapped up third in 1:36.74.

Air Academy kept the ball rolling in the next event as Tommy Baker out-touched Cheyenne Mountain’s Kyle Leach for the 200 free state title, 1:40.71 to 1:40.81. Thompson Valley’s Liam Gately was right behind in third at 1:41.20.

Cheyenne Mountain’s Daniel Carr put on a show in the 200 IM final, demolishing Russell Payne’s 4A record of 1:51.40 and winning by nearly two seconds in 1:48.93. Thompson Valley’s John Thorne swam a 1:50.80 to finish second, well ahead of Silver Creek’s Tyler Lis (1:52.81).

Air Academy picked up its third win in four events in the 50 free, as senior Hunter Doerr finished just off his own 4A record of 20.28 from prelims with a 20.42. Doerr still had plenty of cushion over second place finisher Blake Lawrie of Discovery Canyon, who touched in 21.01. Air Academy’s Jack Dangremond rounded out the top three in 21.07.

Thompson Valley dominated in the diving well, placing three divers in the top four in a tightly-bunched final. Seniors Kyle Pape (431.60) and Collin Williams (427.30) led the way in first and second, while Green Mountain’s Tristan Gess took third in 424.20.

Air Academy continued to rack up points in the 100 fly, as Caleb Hicks lowered Devon Davis’ 4A record of 49.79 to 49.65. Silver Creek senior Tyler Lis tracked down second in 50.19, while Hunter Doerr gave Air Academy a 1-3 finish with his 50.64 for third.

Cheyenne Mountain’s Daniel Carr picked up his second individual state title and class 4A record in the 100 free, blasting a 44.67 to top Discovery Canyon’s Blake Lawrie (45.74) by more than a second. Carr erased Jeff Garnier’s 45.41 from the books and will have two more years to try and track down Clark Smith’s overall state record of 44.04, set in 2013. Air Academy’s Tommy Baker claimed third in 46.32.

Liam Gately gave Thompson Valley its second win of the meet in the 500 free as he held off teammate Chris Eddy for the win, 4:34.22 to 4:36.33. Cheyenne Mountain’s Kyle Leach grabbed third in 4:37.89.

Air Academy crushed the 4A record in the 200 free relay, as Hunter Doerr, Caleb Hicks, Tommy Baker and Jack Dangremond posted a 1:23.24 to obliterate the 1:26.49 they set at last year’s state meet. Cheyenne Mountain’s Brayden Love, Westin Stieglitz, Kaiden Kimball and Kyle Leach finished a distant second in 1:27.64, just ahead of D’Evelyn’s Alexander Moreland, Donovan Hoffman, Alec Sutton and Daniel Graber (1:27.75).

Thompson Valley’s John Thorne ended his high school career on a winning note with a state title in the 100 back, setting a new 4A record with a 48.30. Thorne took just over half a second off his own record of 48.82 set in 2014. Golden’s Daric Sundeen finished more than four seconds behind in 52.55, while Cheyenne Mountain’s Jerry Birnbaum garnered third in 52.74.

After setting a new 4A record in prelims of the 100 breast with a 55.15, D’Evelyn’s Daniel Graber finished just off that time in finals but was still way out front with a 55.35. Longmont’s Connor Dwyer had set the previous 4A record of 56.00 in 2012. Air Academy’s Caleb Hicks and Silver Creek’s Sam Willett tied for second at 57.76.

Cheyenne Mountain iced their team title with a win and new 4A record in the 400 free relay, with Westin Stieglitz, Jerry Birnbaum, Kyle Leach and Daniel Carr touching in 3:06.60 to take just over two tenths off Air Academy’s 3:06.84 from last year. Silver Creek touched four seconds back, with Tyler Lis, Christopher Wingfield, Sam Willett and Noah Jepson posting a 3:10.65. Liam Gately, Jack Kisch, Chris Eddy and John Thorne gave Thompson Valley a third place showing with a 3:11.48.
