Cecilia Porter Breaks Florida 100 Breast Record on Day 2 of Auburn Fall Invitational

Freshman Cecilia Porter went 59.22 in the 100 breaststroke Thursday at the Auburn Fall Invitational, setting the University of Florida record in the event.

Porter went 1:00.02 in prelims and sped up by eight tenths in the evening finals. It downs the 2013 record of 59.55 set by Hilida Luthersdottir and is the fastest time in the country this season.

Porter’s Gators teammate Talia Bates also set the top time in the country (based on times entering Thursday) in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 1:45.29 to win. Bates added a win in the 100 backstroke.

After Day 2 of the three-day meet, Florida leads Auburn, 347-291 in the women’s event. The Gators lead the men’s race, 346-306.

Joining Cecilia Porter and Bates among the winners for the Florida women was Vanessa Pearl, with a 4:10.69 in the 400 individual medley. Florida’s 800 free relay (Tylor Mathieu, Leah Braswell, Taylor Ault, Katelyn Mack) also won in 7:09.51, and Elizabeth Perez was the top scoring in the women’s one-meter diving with 251.63 points.

On the men’s side, Kieran Smith and Bobby Finke again dueled in the 400 IM, the juniors earning a 1-2 finish for the Gators. Smith was fastest in 3:42.11. Eric Friese and Dillon Hillis went 1-2 in the 100 fly for the Gators, Friese clocking in at 46.63 seconds. Hillis would go on to win the 100 breast in 53.15, joining Trey Freeman (1:34.00 200 free) and Adam Chaney (47.23 100 back) among the winners.

The Florida men won both relays: the 200 medley (Chaney, Hillis, Friese, Will Davis) in 1:25.31 and the 800 free (Smith, Finke, Freeman, Alfonso Mestre) in 6:21.67.

Auburn started the finals session strong, winning the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Kensley Merritt, Carly Cummings, Abigail Gibbons and AJ Kutsch clocking in at 1:37.53. Jewels Harris won the women’s 100 fly in 52.76, a 1-2 with Gibbons, and Conner Pruitt scored another diving win, claiming the men’s three-meter.
