Call for Applications: Swimming World’s Summer 2021 Journalism and Social Media Internships

Be a part of the Olympic action this summer!

Swimming World Magazine, as part of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, is seeking writers and content creators for the summer who are interested in enhancing their journalism and social media skills, while garnering valuable experience to add to their resumes and being a part of the Olympic experience. Our successful internship programs have connected interns with jobs in related fields across the country!  For this internship, you can be located anywhere in the world!

Journalist Intern Program

Our journalist interns will learn the ropes from our senior writers by assisting them with a variety of journalism projects, including preparations for the exciting upcoming 2021 Olympic Trials and Tokyo Games.  As an intern, you will learn a range of journalism skills such as:

  • Gathering information and research (and learning about aquatic sports in the process)
  • Prioritizing and understanding how you fit into a news desk and wider news operation
  • How to write a news story
  • How to write a feature
  • Writing for digital media
  • Shorthand/recording and how they apply in law
  • Understanding media law
  • Legal and ethical considerations
  • Using social media in journalism
  • Technology tools for journalists

A large percentage of Swimming World’s most-read online content has been written by our stellar interns.  Our cohort of interns significantly improves our ability to cover aquatic sports and events, and engage the worldwide community of athletes, coaches, fans, and enthusiasts!

Social Media Intern Program

Get ready for an Olympic summer!  Social media is a widely relied upon source for news, entertainment, and connection for people all over the world.  At Swimming World and the International Swimming Hall of Fame, we use social media as a way to extend the reach of our news stories.  We also use it to provide stories about people in the aquatics community, share photos and videos of events, re-share fun content we find, give inspiration for athletes at all levels, celebrate the heroes of aquatic sports, and much more.

As a social media intern you will learn about:

  • Social strategy and planning
  • Guidelines and ethics for using social media on a professional level
  • Working with influencers and brands
  • Creating original content
  • Using a variety of technology platforms
  • Attention to detail

If you or someone on your team – athlete, manager, grad assistant, etc. – is interested in gaining exposure and journalism experience this season, please submit the following to Brandi West at BrandiW@swimmingworld.com

  • A brief bio including name, school, conference, major, class and how this internship will contribute to your professional goals.
  • An aquatics-related writing sample. This may be an analysis piece, a feature story, or a training-specific article. Be sure to edit your story thoroughly. Look through our website to see examples of our intern stories!
  • Applications are due Friday, April 16th.

*Applicants will be notified of their selection by Wednesday, April 21st. Selected applicants will begin on Monday, April 26th, 2021. The internship will conclude Friday, August 20, 2021.

Social Media Application Process

If you or someone on your team – athlete, manager, grad assistant, etc. – is interested in gaining exposure to social media this season, please submit the following to Brandi West at BrandiW@swimmingworld.com.

  • A brief bio including name, school, conference, major, class and how this experience will contribute to your professional goals.
  • Screenshots, written work, or links to previous work in social media. This does not have to be aquatics related, as personal accounts are acceptable.
  • Applications are due Friday, April 16th.

*Applicants will be notified of their selection by Wednesday, April 21st. Selected applicants will begin on Monday, April 26th, 2021. The internship will conclude Friday, August 20, 2021.

The Details

Do you like working from a coffee shop or from home? As long as you have access to email and WiFi, you can work for us! This internship is conducted via email and Slack – all work can be done remotely.  This is open to incoming high school seniors and up.

If you are interested in a career in journalism, communications, marketing, social media, business, sports, public relations, blogging, writing, web content writing, graphic design or if you want to be an entrepreneur… YOU SHOULD APPLY!  We want interns from all areas of aquatic sports – swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open water swimming.

My semester will not conclude until the first week of May. Where will the internship take place? Is it possible to do both until my spring semester is over?

The internship takes place remotely, so you can complete your semester and begin contributing at the same time.
