This Weekend’s California High School State Championships Loaded With Talent (Psych Sheets)

The top high school swimmers in California, coming off their sectional competitions, will race at the state championships on Friday and Saturday. The meet is scheduled for the Clovis Olympic Swim Complex at Clovis West High School, with the girls from Santa Margarita looking to continue their speedy postseason.

Last weekend, while racing at the CIF-Southern Section Division I Championships, Santa Margarita delivered numerous elite performances, and more of the same is expected over the weekend. The school is seeded No. 1 in all three relays, including a sub-1:40 marker in the 200 medley relay and a sub-3:20 time in the 400 freestyle relay.

Freshman Teagan O’Dell is the top seed in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, with her seed time in the medley event sitting at 1:55.46. Meanwhile, senior teammate Justina Kozan is the top seed in the 200 freestyle at 1:45.09 and the 100 butterfly.

In boys competition, the 500 freestyle figures to be the can’t-miss event of the weekend, with Loyola junior Rex Maurer slotted as the favorite following his time of 4:13.90 from the CIF-SS meet. That time was a little more than a second off the national high school record of 4:12.87, set in 2016 by Grant Shoults. Maurer, also the top seed in the 200 freestyle, will be challenged by Sonora’s Matthew Chai, whose mark of 4:15.91 in the CIF-SS Division Two meet broke a legendary Jeff Kostoff record. It was in 1983 in which Kostoff clocked 4:16.39, which stood as the national standard for years.

Here is the full psych sheet for the meet.
