Boston College Men, Bucknell Women Earn Victories in Saturday Competition

The Bucknell women defeated Boston College while the men fell.

The Boston College Eagles swimming and diving teams traveled down to Lewisberg, PA, on Saturday for a duel meet with the Bucknell University Bison. The teams split the contest, with the BC men claiming victory and the Bucknell women emerging on top.

BRONX, New York / LEWISBURG, Penn. — The Boston College swim and dive team wrapped up two days of road meets, capping off the weekend with wins over Fordham and Bucknell. The Eagles earned first-place finishes in 21 out of 32 events against Fordham and 19 out of 32 events against Bucknell. The team is back in action for its final home meet of the season on Jan. 25 against rival Boston University.

WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

vs. Bucknell

Grimes, Covington, Lin and Dolan took the top spot again in the 200 yard medley relay, improving to a 1:44.39 time.
Lin won the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.76.
Dolan placed first in the 50 yard freestyle, finishing in 23.40.
Ellie Uhl won the 1-meter dive with a score of 238.05.
Mackenna Buchanan (263.48), Kate Cilley (242.63) and Uhl (229.35) swept the top three spots in the 3-meter dive.

MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

vs. Bucknell

Roche, Sami Fares, Clark and Geoghegan Ribeiro placed first in the 200 yard medley relay with a 1:31.87 finish.
Szmania placed first in the 1000 yard freestyle, improving to a 9:37.64 finish. He also took the top spot in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing in 4:39.66.
Clark placed first in the 200 yard freestyle with a 1:39.18 finish. He also won the 100 yard freestyle (45.46) and the 200 yard individual medley (1:51.41).
Roche won the 100 yard backstroke with a 49.67 performance. He also placed first in the 100 yard butterfly, finishing in 50.96.
Fares placed first in the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing in 57.51.
O’Leary took the top finish in the 200 yard butterfly with a 1:54.66 finish. He also won the 200 yard backstroke, finishing in 1:52.03.
Nickerson won the 1-meter dive with a score of 296.40. He also took the top spot in the 3-meter dive with a 338.25 score.
Shepanzyk won the 200 yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:05.97.
The team of Geoghegan Ribeiro, Roche, Santana and Threlkeld placed first in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a 3:06.11 finish.
The team totaled 181 points to Bucknell’s 113.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women’s swimming & diving team moved to 9-1 on the season with its 163.5-136.5 victory over Boston College on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.

Bolstered by 11 first-place finishes, and 1-2-3 efforts in two events, the Bison women cruised past the Eagles on Senior Day. Their nine overall wins is their highest total since the 1997-98 campaign, when they finished 11-2; with one dual left on their calendar, they will have an opportunity to reach the double digits in a single season for the sixth time in program history.

The Bucknell men, who dropped a 181-113 decision to the visiting Eagles to move to 5-5 on the season, saw Leo Kuyl win the 50 freestyle. In addition, Kuyl went second in the 100 freestyle and led off the runner-up 400 freestyle relay team. Matt McGoey added second-place showings in the 200 butterfly and 200 IM; he also anchored that runner-up 400 freestyle relay team.

Maddie Hartigan was a standout performer for the Bison, winning the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle races; in addition, she anchored the first-place 400 freestyle relay team. Hartigan’s time of 51.20 in the 100 freestyle was good for seventh in school history.

Catherine Craig swept the breaststroke races while Emma Hadley won both backstroke events. The Bison’s other individual winners were Alexis Faria (100 butterfly), Abby Merriman (1,000 freestyle) and Maggie Wyngowski (200 IM).

Bucknell went 1-2-3 in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM, with Merriman finishing second to Hartigan in the 500 freestyle and Craig touching the wall right after Wyngowski in the 200 IM.

Before the dual meet, the Bison recognized seniors Brooke Collins, Hadley, McGoey, Merriman, Katherine O’Shea, Michael Park, Lauren Rajauski (diving/diving team manager) and Paige Schoelkopf.

Bucknell wraps up dual meet action at rival Lehigh on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m.
