Phoebe Bacon led the way for Wisconsin with three wins in the Badgers’ first conference meet of the season. She claimed the 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke, the latter in a 1-2 finish with Mara Newman. Bacon also led off the second-place 200 medley relay.

The Badgers also got points via the distance contingent, with Emily Acker sweeping the 500 freestyle and 1,000 free. Lillie Hosack added wins in the 100 free and 200 free and was second in the 50 free ahead of teammate Alana Palmer.

Alex Reddington, Mikayla Seigal and Kaylyn Schoof grabbed the top three spots in the 100 butterfly in a major coup. Hosack, Schoof, Ecker and Palmer were second in the 400 free relay.

On the men’s side, Wisconsin turned to a pair of freshmen. Jacob Newmark won the 200 free and 200 back, the latter in a 1-2 with Drew Nixdorf, who was also second din the 200 fly. Andrew Benson won the 100 free and the 200 IM and was second in the 50 free.

Wes Jekel paired a victory in the 100 back, a spot ahead of teammate Eric Gessner, with finishing second to Gessner in the 100 fly and second to Benson in the 200 IM. Joshua Danhauser won the 500 free in a 1-2 with Jude Williams and finished second in the 1,000 free.

“It was a long time coming for us to have the opportunity to race today and I’m really proud of the effort the Badgers put forth,” head coach Yuri Suguiyama said. “Good wins in all of our competitions today to kick start the era of the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center.”

Emma Lezer set the tone for the Minnesota women. She teamed with Emily Cook, Emma Linscott and Olivia Bloomer to win the 200 medley relay, then clocked in at NCAA B cuts to claim the 100 breast and 200 breast.

Indy Jongman sprinted to victory in the 50 free and was second in the 100 free. Cook was second in the 100 back and third in the 200 back. Sarah Bacon tallied the top score in both diving events. Jongman led off the 400 free relay, joining with Jordan McGinty, Pyper Doo and Bloomer to win in 3:21.22.

Max McHugh swept the men’s breaststroke events for the Golden Gophers. Sawyer Grimes won the 1,000 free and took second in the 200 back, and Kaiser Neverman won the 200 fly in a B cut time of 1:46.59.

“After almost 11 months without racing in the pool or competing on the boards, it was simply great to see our student-athletes have the opportunity to be a team today and do what they love,” Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer said. “We are all over the map right now in terms of level of preparedness, but at least we have a starting point and a meet under our belt. Back to work on Monday!”

Purdue’s men’s team started fast with a victory in the 200 medley relay, the squad of Michael Juengel, Trent Pellini, Ryan Hrosik and Nikola Acin clocking in at 1:26.00. Acin led off the 400 free relay, teaming with Pellini, Hrosik and Nick Sherman to win in 2:55.32.

Coleman Modglin took second in the 200 breast and third in the 100 breast. Sherman and Charlie King went 2-3 in the 200 free.

Purdue also dominated diving on the men’s side, with Brandon Loschiavo winning the three-meter and finishing runner-up to teammate Greg Duncan on one-meter.
