Behind Brendan Burns, Indiana Wins Four Big Ten Honors Awards

Indiana junior swimmer Brendan Burns was one of four Hoosiers to be recognized in the Big Ten honors, announced Wednesday.

Burns’ teammate Carson Tyler was named the men’s freshman of the week. Anne Fowler and Brearna Crawford were the women’s diver and freshman of the week, respectively. Carson’s honor means divers account for three of the six award winners.

The other two honors went to Jake Butler of Minnesota as the men’s diver of the week and Penn State’s Madison Murtagh as women’s swimmer of the week.

Burns won three events in a 173-120 win for the Hoosiers over Northwestern. He claimed the 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly, the latter in a pool record 1:43.18. The junior was also on the winning 200 medley relay.

Butler notched a pair of NCAA Zone qualifying scores in a win over Purdue. The junior won the one-meter competition with a score of 363.90 and the three-meter at 401.18.

Carson got on the board for the divers in his first collegiate meet. He quickly got his name on the Indiana pool record board with a score of 408.00 points in the three-meter competition. That score and the 345.60 he posted on the one-meter board are both NCAA Zones qualification scores.

Murtagh paced Penn State to a 181-107 win over West Virginia. She won the 200 free and 500 free for the Nittany Lions. The senior is the first Penn State women’s swimmer of the week since Ally McHugh on Oct. 10, 2018.

Fowler had a hand in the win over Northwestern by winning the one-meter dive in 327.20 and finishing second in the three-meter (341.90). Both are good enough to qualify for NCAA Zones. The sophomore was named the freshman of the week and diver of the week once each as a freshman last season.

Crawford’s got a win in her first meet, winning the 200 breaststroke against Northwestern. The native of New Zealand tallied NCAA B cuts in both that event and the 100 breast.
