As Bella Sims Lurks, A Look At the Iconic NAG (17-18) Of Missy Franklin In 200 Freestyle (Video)

There was no shortage of dynamic performances as the East and West editions of Junior Nationals opened on Wednesday night Greensboro and Austin, respectively. Among the headliner efforts was Bella Sims’ outing in the 200-yard freestyle, where she produced a time of 1:40.78. That swim by the 17-year-old Sims was less than a half-second off the 17-18 NAG, which stands to Missy Franklin at 1:40.31 from 2014.

Sims delivered her swim on the leadoff leg of the Sandpipers of Nevada’s victorious 800 freestyle relay. She has a full schedule planned for the next three days, including another go at the 200 freestyle on Friday. Perhaps Sims will give the legendary record of Franklin another scare. From her Wednesday effort, Sims now ranks No. 8 in the history of the event.

When Franklin registered that record, it was en route to the NCAA title in the 200 freestyle. At the time, Franklin was a freshman at Cal and was coming off spectacular performances at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona. Franklin’s NAG is considered one of the premier age-group standards on the books.

Here is a look at Franklin’s record-breaking swim from 2014, thanks to video from YouTube.
