Art Adamson Invitational Day 1: Maggie Mac Neil Races to 21.03, Fastest Time in NCAA This Year

The 2022 Art Adamson Invitational kicked off at Texas A&M on Wednesday.

Several colleges from around the country are participating in the invitational, one of several midseason college invites taking place this week.

LSU’s Maggie Mac Neil was stellar on the first day, throwing down the fastest 50 free time of the season on her way to victory.

Here is a look at the Day 1 events:

Women’s 200 Free Relay

USC started the meet in speedy fashion by winning the women’s 200 freestyle relay. Anicka Delgado led off in 22.34 and was joined by Elise Green (22.10), Hanna Henderson (21.57) and Kaitlyn Dobler (21.37) as the Trojans finished in 1:27.38.

Alabama’s Kailia Antoniou, Morgan Scott, Cora Dupre and Kailyn Winter took second in 1:27.56.

LSU’s Katarina Milutonovich, Maggie Mac Neil, Peyton Curry and Michaela De Vielliers took third in 1:27.63.

Men’s 200 Free Relay

The Alabama men kicked off the meet with an extremely fast swim in the 200 free relay. Matthew Menke (19.75), Tim Korstanje (19.44), Derek Maas (19.21) and Kacper Piotrowski (19.45) combined to win the event in 1:17.85.

LSU’s Pawel Uryniuk, Brooks Curry, Andrew Garon and Noah Cumby took second in 1:17.95. Curry’s split was 18.38 in the second leg. He was out in 8.56 and back in 9.82.

Texas A&M’s Kaloyan Bratanov, Connor Foote, Kraig Bray and Baylor Nelson took third in 1:18.43.

Women’s 500 Free

USC’s Marlene Kahler dropped 1:53 from prelims and threw down a 4:40.57 to win the women’s 500 free at the Art Adamson Invitational .

Alabama’s Kensey McMahon finished second in 4:43.33, dropping a half second.

Texas A&M’s Chloe Stepanek finished third in 4:44.06.

Men’s 500 Free

Alabama’s Victor Johansson dropped over a second from prelims and got his hand on the wall first, winning the men’s 500 free in 4:14.34, two seconds ahead of the field.

It was a 1-2 finish for Alabama as Charlie Hawke finished second in 4:16.57, ahead of Texas A&M’s William Coakley (4:20.12).

Women’s 200 IM

USC got another win, this time in the 200 IM as fifth-year senior Isabelle Odgers dropped 1:42 from prelims to put together a stellar swim, finishing in 1:55.84.

Alabama Olympian Rhyan White took second in 1:56.83, dropping nearly a second and a half from prelims.

USC went 1-3-5-6 as Ashley McMillan was third (1:57.52) and Justina Kozan was fifth (1:58.66) and Katherine Adams (1:58.97) took sixth. Alabama’s Diana Petkova was fourth (1:57.97).

Men’s 200 IM

Texas A&M freshman Baylor Nelson cruised to a near-two-second victory in the men’s 200 IM at the Art Adamson Invitational.

He dropped more than a second from prelims and touched the wall in 1:41.83.

It led a 1-2-3-4-6 finish for the Aggies. Anze Fers Erzen was second (1:43.36), Andreas Puente Bustamante was third (1:43.37), Kaloyan Bratanov was fourth (1:44.12) and Vincent Ribeiro was sixth (1:44.98).

Women’s 50 Free

LSU’s Maggie Mac Neil was incredibly fast in the women’s 50 free. She touched the wall in 21.03 to win at the Art Adamson Invitational.

Her time was about two tenths of a second off the NCAA record and is the fastest time of the season by anyone. Mac Neil took second in the 50 free at the 2021 NCAA Championships and third in 2022, but this swim was her lifetime best by 0.14. She moved into a tie with Erika Brown for fourth all-time in the event, with only Kate Douglass, Abbey Weitzeil and Gretchen Walsh having ever been quicker.

Alabama’s Kailia Antoniou took second in 21.86, followed by Alabama teammate Morgan Scott (22.07) and USC’s Anicka Delgado (22.18).

Men’s 50 free: Brooks Curry throws down sub 19

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

The Alabama women put together a strong swim to win the women’s 400 medley relay. Dropping more than two seconds from prelims, the Crimson Tide got to the wall in 3:29.87.

Rhyan White led off with a 51.90, followed by Avery Wiseman (58.81), Morgan Scott (51.52) and Kailia Antoniou (47.64).

USC’s Hanna Henderson, Kailtyn Dobler, Anicka Delgado and Elise Garcia took second in 3:31.58.

Texas A&M’s Jordan Buechler, Bobbi Kennett, Olivia Theall and Chloe Stepanek took third in 3:33.09.
