Rick DeMont, head coach at the University of Arizona, has experienced Olympic Trials many times as an athlete and many more times as a coach. DeMont was the rightful Olympic champion at 16 (Munich, 1972) and a world champion and world record-holder at 17. He’s been to the top and has guided countless athletes to the Olympic stage since his swimming days concluded.

DeMont sat down with Swimming World to chat about this beginning stage of taper, how the Arizona pros (notables: Margo Geer, Matt Grevers, Marcus Titus) are looking, and how he keeps swimmers’ nerves in check when they find themselves in a funk.
