Anna Belousova Sweeps Double Breaststroke Wins at Day Two of Austin Speedo Sectionals

Friday night at the Austin Speedo Sectionals was filled with dominating event winners and close races. Anna Belousova of Aggie Swim Club swept both women’s breaststroke events along with Will Licon making a Longhorn sweep over the men’s breaststroke events. Behind the winners of the men’s 200 free and the women’s 400 IM were hungry swimmers racing in tight finishes to score into the top three.

Longhorn Aquatics continue to lead by over 200 points in the men’s team rankings with 335 points. Runner-up on night two is the Alamo Area Aquatic Association with 135 points and Aggie Swim Club with 114 points.

Aggie Swim Club also continues to lead the women’s rankings with 267 points, just 54 points ahead of Longhorn Aquatics. Rice Aquatics sits in third with 108 points.

Women’s 200 Breast

Aggie’s Belousova won the first final of the night by over four seconds at 2:29.62. Teammate Victoria Roubique (2:33.70) took the close race for second to complete the Aggie 1-2 finish ahead of unattached swimmer Olivia Johnson (2:34.06).

Rounding off the top eight was unattached Ema Rajic (2:35.08), Rice’s Marie-claire Schillinger (2:36.09), Lakeside’s Jenna Watson (2:36.68), Tiger’s Lauren Thompson (2:38.94), and City of Plano’s Caitlyn Groff (2:41.02).

Men’s 200 Breast

American record holder Licon of Longhorn Aquatics won his primary event with a time of 2:10.82. Another 1-2 team finish was helped by fellow Longhorn Joseph Daniels (2:16.02). In a close race for third, Aggie’s Jonathan Tybur (2:18.97) finished three one-hundredths ahead of Tiger’s Luca Pfyffer (2:19.00).

Austin’s Adam Fusti-Molnar (2:20.81), Longhorn’s Arthur Cheng (2:22.29), and Power for Life teammates Charles Bennett (2:23.20) and Jacob Schababerle (2:23.73) all finished in the top eight.

Women’s 200 Free

Another Aggie champ, Claire Rasmus just dipped under the two minute mark at 1:59.95. Runner-up behind Rasmus was Longhorn’s Lauren Case, finishing at 2:01.70. More Aggie representation shown as Haley Yelle (2:02.28) and Karling Hemstreet (2:02.69) finished shortly after.

Fifth through eighth place went to Austin’s Ella Collins (2:02.72), Longhorn’s Ella Tierney (2:03.89), Houston’s Zarena Brown (2:05.82), and Longhorn’s Logan Shiller (2:10.21).

Men’s 200 Free

Quest’s Jeff Newkirk took the men’s 200 free title at 1:50.90. In one of the tightest races of the evening, nine one-hundredths separated the next four finishers. Winning the battle to the wall to take second was Alamo’s Zachary Yeadon (1:51.56). Longhorn’s JohnThomas Larson (1:51.59) took third to out-touch NCAP’s Sam Pomajevich (1:51.60) by one one-hundredth. Aggie’s Shaine Casas (1:51.65) capped off the mad-dash to take fifth place.

Magnolia’s Lucas Stuart (1:52.47), Eagle’s Steven Richardson (1:52.90), and North Texas’s David Hallaron (1:52.98) also finished in the top eight.

Women’s 400 IM

At the halfway mark, a trio of swimmers lead the championship final within a second of each other. Yet Magnolia’s Kaitlynn Sims pushed the strongest back half of the field to pull away and win by over six seconds at 4:50.36.

In another close finish, Texas Ford’s Ashlyn Fiorilli (4:56.41), Crawfish’s Jolee Liles (4:56.50), and Nitro’s Ana Herceg (4:56.53) took the next three spots. Lakeside teammates Megan Morris (5:01.03) and Jenna Watson (5:02.07) finished in fifth and sixth place. Rice’s Ella Flowers (5:02.55) and unattached Regan Barney (5:04.30) closed off the top eight.

Men’s 400 IM

Night two came to a close as Longhorn’s Mason Tenney proved his dominance over the field. Tenney touched in with a time of 4:23.78, dropping 8.92 seconds off his prelims time and 5.85 seconds off his personal best. Tenney finished over four seconds ahead of next finisher teammate Colter Carman (4:28.04) to make a Longhorn 1-2 Finish. Alamo’s David Forsyth finished in third place at 4:32.30.

Putting a close to the last final of the night was Crawfish’s John Boylan (4:33.99), Lakeside’s Colin Feehery (4:34.82), Rockwall’s Ford Blaylock (4:35.07), Aggie’s Jake Gibbons (4:35.70), and Nitro’s Michael Shay (4:36.17).

The action picks up tomorrow with the 100 back, 400 free, 100 fly, and 400 free relay. Morning prelims begin at 9:00 am CDT, evening finals begin at 5:30 pm CDT.
