Gabriele Detti, Simona Quadarella Among 10 Italian swimmers to Test Positive For COVID-19

The Italian Swimming Federation announced ten of its national team athletes have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a news bulletin. World champs Simona Quadarella and Gabriele Detti were among the ten names listed that tested positive for the virus, along with Federico Burdisso, Martina Caramignoli, Marco De Tullio, Stefano Di Cola, Sara Gailli, Edoardo Giorgetti, Matteo Lamberti and Alessio Proietti Colonna.

The ten swimmers were at a training camp in Livigno and the training has been put on pause for the time being while the athletes recover at the facility. The athletes had been in Livigno since October 11 as the camp was supposed to finish November 5.

All athletes are asymptomatic and the examinations of the members of the technical-health staff gave negative results. The athletes had all received negative COVID tests before gathering at the training camp.

Notably, none of the ten swimmers are participating in the International Swimming League in Budapest as Aqua Centurions team captain and Olympic champion Federica Pellegrini has remained at home in Italy to recover from a positive COVID-19 test and has missed the first ISL meet with her team.

Simona Quadarella was the world champ in the 1500 freestyle in 2019 and also the silver medalist in the 800 that same summer. Gabriele Detti won a bronze in the 400 freestyle at the 2019 Worlds and was also the gold medalist in the 800 in 2017. De Tullio made the final in the 400 freestyle at the 2019 Worlds while Di Cola swam on the 4×200 freestyle relay team that finished fifth.
