Adam Peaty Welcomes Sun Yang’s Absence From Tokyo; Calls For Lifetime Ban

Olympic 100m breaststroke champion Adam Peaty has welcomed the absence of Sun Yang from Tokyo but believes the Chinese swimmer should have received a lifetime ban.

Sun was handed a suspension of four years and three months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport following a retrial and will now be ineligible until June 2024 by which time he’ll be 33.

Peaty made his feelings clear last year when Sun’s initial eight-year ban was announced before the Swiss Federal Tribunal overturned the verdict and sent it back to CAS.

The 100 breaststroke world record-holder accused Sun then of “disrespecting the sport, you’re disrespecting yourself and you’re disrespecting your country.”

On Tuesday he took to social media, saying:

Peaty looked on at the 2019 World Championships as Sun directed his anger at team-mate Duncan Scott who had refused to share the podium with him after the 200 free, following the example set by Australian Mack Horton after the 400.

On Scott and Horton, it started with their provocation. On his first ban years ago, that drug is now dropped out of the performance-enhancement list, so he was actually mispunished because of inadequate drug knowledge at the time. However, this latest ban is a reasonable consequence. But Peaty said there were offences before hammering blood sample. So I wonder if there are other clear cases of his offence.
