2021 TYR Pro Swim Series: Day Four Prelims Highlighted By Justin Ress, Madisyn Cox

The final day of prelims of the TYR Pro Swim Series in San Antonio and Richmond featured a handful limited fields, but the evening finals will feature some quality matchups. Among the athletes slated for action at night are Regan Smith, Carson Foster, Kathleen Baker and Olivia Smoliga. Here is what unfolded during Sunday qualifying.

Women’s 200 Individual Medley

Madisyn Cox and Kathleen Baker, racing at the San Antonio site, secured the top two seeds in the 200 medley, with Cox grabbing the No. 1 slot in 2:13.96. Baker was just behind in 2:14.20, and both women figure to contend for Olympic berths later this summer. Behind a time of 2:16.46, Isabel Ivey qualified third-fastest.

Men’s 200 Individual Medley

The Foster brothers – Jake and Carson – will be in the spotlight during the final in San Antonio after qualifying first and fourth, respectively, during prelims. Jake Foster was fastest during qualifying, on the strength of a 2:01.93 performance, while Carson Foster went 2:03.82. Taking the second and third spots were Kieran Smith (2:03.01) and Jay Litherland (2:03.04). Will Licon (2:04.09) and Andrew Seliskar (2:04.38) also advanced to the final.

Women’s 200 Backstroke

The strength of this event will come from San Antonio, where Regan Smith will be chasing her fourth victory of the weekend. Smith (2:12.99) qualified third in the event in which she is the world-record holder, trailing only Phoebe Bacon (2:11.83) and Isabelle Stadden (2:12.14). Lisa Bratton (2:13.52) was behind Smith in fourth, while Kathleen Baker opted to scratch the event to focus on the 200 medley.

Men’s 200 Backstroke

There were several scratches in the event, including an opt-out by Carson Foster. Taking the top seed was Will Grant in 2:01.24. A trio of big names followed Grant in San Antonio, with Austin Katz going 2:02.74 for the second seed and Olympic champion Ryan Murphy (2:03.05) and Shaine Casas (2:04.09) following. In Richmond, Nick Alexander covered his four laps in 2:03.53.

Women’s 100 Freestyle

Coming off a victory in the 50 freestyle in which she dipped under the 25-second barrier, Catie DeLoof kept her momentum going by securing the top seed in the 100 free. DeLoof clocked 54.49 in Richmond and was followed by several 55-second efforts from San Antonio. Abbey Weitzeil (55.28) and Olivia Smoliga (55.32) were separated by less than a tenth, and Natalie Hinds touched the wall in 55.52.

Men’s 100 Freestyle

Justin Ress followed a strong showing in the 100 backstroke from Saturday night by nailing down the top seed in the 100 free with a mark of 49.49. Ress was followed in Richmond by Michael Chadwick, who went 49.80. Austin Surhoff (50.08) and Coleman Stewart (50.40) will also be factors at night. In San Antonio, Ryan Held went 49.70, followed by Zach Apple in 50.20.
