2020 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships: Day Four Finals Live: Waddell Blasts 44.2 in Showdown With Casas in 100 Back

The fourth and penultimate night of the 2020 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships featured the finals of the 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 medley relay. Alabama won three different events in their arch rival’s pool as the Crimson Tide swept the 100 backstroke and nearly won both medley relays. Zane Waddell broke the conference record in the 100 back and split even faster in leading off the medley relay. Alabama’s Rhyan White also contributed to the 100 back sweep in winning the women’s event, nearly breaking 50 seconds.

Tennessee continues to lead the women’s meet as they are close to winning their first ever team title. They won the medley relay to set themselves up nicely for tomorrow.

Georgia swept the 200 butterfly finals with Dakota Luther and Camden Murphy taking those titles, and freshman Zoie Hartman also stood atop the podium for the 100 breast.

South Carolina also got to hear its fight song on Friday night as Itay Goldfaden won the 100 breaststroke final.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Georgia sophomore Dakota Luther was not in the lead until the final stroke as she won the 200 butterfly final on Friday night at the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships in Auburn, Alabama with a 1:52.47. Luther ran down Kentucky’s Izzy Gati (1:52.54), who led for 199 yards before getting touched out at the end. It was a new best time for Gati.

Georgia junior Courtney Harnish won the battle for third place as she completed the podium with a 1:53.22, just ahead of Tennessee’s Tess Cieplucha (1:53.23). 2018 champ Jing Quah (1:53.96) finished in fifth place while South Carolina’s Hallie Kinsey (1:54.12) was sixth.

Texas A&M’s Taylor Pike (1:54.29) was seventh while Alabama’s Alexis Preski (1:56.82) was eighth.

Men’s 200 Butterfly

Georgia swept the 200 butterfly on Friday night at the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships with Camden Murphy taking out the men’s 200 fly after Dakota Luther won the women’s event just a couple minutes prior. The Bulldogs also went 1-3 in both the men’s and women’s 200 fly as freshman Harry Homans finished in third at 1:42.02, just getting out-touched by Missouri senior Micah Slaton (1:42.01).

The Bulldogs were able to jump Texas A&M for second place with their efforts in the 200 butterfly.

Auburn senior Santiago Grassi (1:42.85) took out the final out first as he led through 125 yards but fell off pace on the last 75, dropping to sixth place at 1:42.85.

Tennessee’s Kayky Mota (1:42.66) and Marc Hinawi (1:42.69) finished in fourth and fifth for the Volunteers. Kentucky’s Mason Wilby (1:43.23) and Florida’s Miguel Cancel (1:44.52) also swam in the championship final.

Women’s 100 Backstroke

Alabama sophomore Rhyan White swam a monstrous 50.02 in winning the 100 backstroke final to nearly add her name to the prestigious sub-50 second club. White blew away the field as seniors Sherridon Dressel (50.64) and Asia Seidt (50.73) finished in second and third. Both of them swam very good times but it was not enough as White was just on point with her speed.

Missouri’s Sarah Thompson (51.07) finished in fourth place with a best time. Kentucky freshman Caitlin Brooks (51.91) finished in fifth as she is another name to add in the long list of great backstrokers to come through Lexington.

Florida closed the gap in the team standings against Tennessee as Emma Ball finished in sixth for the Gators at 52.04. Tennessee had no A-Finalists.

Alabama’s Morgan Scott (52.42) and Texas A&M’s Raena Eldridge (52.53) also swam in the final.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

Alabama swept the 100 backstrokes on Friday night at the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, matching what Georgia did in the 200 butterfly earlier tonight. Rhyan White won the 100 back women’s event and senior Zane Waddell followed that up with a 44.24 in the final with a new SEC meet record, lowering fellow Alabama swimmer Connor Oslin’s 44.73 record from 2017. Waddell won the heavily-hyped matchup with Texas A&M sophomore Shaine Casas (44.68) as both guys sit first and second in Division I respectively with 33 days until NCAAs in Indianapolis.

Casas was able to help A&M get past Georgia as it looks like it will be a major fight for that second place spot between the Aggies and Bulldogs.

Missouri senior Daniel Hein (45.93) finished in third place, nearly matching what teammate Sarah Thompson did in the women’s event earlier. LSU’s Karl Luht (46.02) finished in fourth, not far off what he went this morning.

Alabama also flexed its muscles with freshman Matthew Menke placing sixth at 46.29.

Tennessee’s Matthew Garcia (46.10), Auburn’s Christian Ginieczki (46.56) and Florida’s Clark Beach (46.65) also swam in the championship final.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

The Georgia Bulldogs continued their strong night with a third win on Friday night in Auburn at the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships with freshman Zoie Hartman taking the 100 breast at 58.21. To top it all off, Hartman went 1-2 with junior Danielle Della Torre (58.88) as the Bulldogs are closing in on fourth place.

There was a major shift in the team standings as Texas A&M past Florida for second place due to Anna Belousova (59.60) placing third in the final. Tennessee extended its lead with Tjasa Pintar (1:00.78) and Nikol Popov (1:00.96) placing seventh and eighth but also picking up valuable points for the Volunteers.

South Carolina also had a good showing with freshman Taylor Steele (59.74) and Margaret Higgs (59.82) placing fourth and fifth for the Gamecocks.

LSU’s Niamh Robinson also broke a minute for the first time in placing sixth at 59.85.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

South Carolina senior Itay Goldfaden won the 100 breaststroke title on Friday night at the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships. After struggling all season to regain form, Goldfaden defended his 2019 title with a 51.35 to just hold off Alabama freshman Liam Bell (51.39) in what would have been the Crimson Tide’s third title of the night.

Florida’s Dillon Hillis (51.46) and Marco Guarente (52.15) continued to pile on the points for the Gators as they placed third and fifth as they extended their lead over Texas A&M. The Aggies pulled away from Georgia in this event with Andres Puente finishing seventh at 52.27.

Alabama’s Derek Maas (52.24) and Tennessee’s Michael Houlie (52.34) also swam in the championship final.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

Tennessee won its third relay of the 2020 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships as Meghan Small (51.65), Alexis Yager (59.51), Erika Brown (49.88) and Stanzi Moseley (47.79) just held off Alabama at 3:28.83. The Crimson Tide finished in second at 3:28.90 with a valiant effort from Rhyan White (50.85), Kaila Wong (59.32), Flora Molnar (50.96) and Morgan Scott (47.77).

Kentucky also had a really good showing in the relay with Asia Seidt (50.90), Bailey Bonnett (59.50), Izzy Gati (51.08) and Ali Galyer (48.21) getting third at 3:29.69.

Florida (3:31.13), Georgia (3:31.18), Missouri (3:32.58), Auburn (3:33.68) and South Carolina (3:33.75) also finished in the top eight.

The quickest splits outside the top three came from Missouri’s Sarah Thompson (51.17), Georgia’s Danielle DellaTorre (58.84), Florida’s Sherridon Dressel (50.84) and Arkansas’ Anna Hopkin (45.78).

Men’s 400 Medley Relay

Alabama finished the night off with a third win in the 400 medley relay on Friday night at the 2020 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships in Auburn, Alabama, the home of their arch rival. The Crimson Tide team of Zane Waddell (44.10), Liam Bell (50.78), Tyler Sesvold (45.09) and Jonathan Berneburg (42.20) dominated from start to finish at 3:02.17, lowering the SEC meet record set last season by Missouri.

Waddell led off in a 44.1, faster than he swam the individual 100 backstroke earlier in the night.

Florida came in second with a strong back half to overtake Texas A&M. Clark Beach (46.59), Dillon Hillis (51.01), Will Davis (45.57) andKieran Smith (41.79) finished in second for the Gators at 3:04.96 as they look to be well on their way to an eighth straight SEC team title. The Aggies finished in third with Shaine Casas (45.50), Benjamin Walker (51.21), Adam Koster (46.40) and Mark Theall (42.04) at 3:05.15.

The quickest splits outside the top three came from Tennessee’s Matthew Garcia (46.34), South Carolina’s Itay Goldfaden (51.50), Auburn’s Santiago Grassi (45.08) and LSU’s Brooks Curry (41.25).

South Carolina (3:06.88), LSU (3:07.02), Auburn (3:07.12), Georgia (3:07.81) and Kentucky (3:07.85) also scored in the top eight.
