2020 NJCAA National Championships Day 1: IRSC Takes Early Lead

The first day of the 2020 NJCAA National Championships got underway today at the Anne Wilder Aquatic Complex, Ft. Pierce, FL. The events contested today include 50 breast, 200 IM, 50 free, 1-M diving, 800 free relay and the 1000 free.

Indian River State College leads on both the men’s and women’s sides, with a convincing margin on both sides.

Women’s 1000 Free

Victoria Ortiz of Indian River State College took top honours with a time of 10:10.93. In second place was Charlise Oberholzer of IRSC (10:13.96), meanwhile teammate Kailea Green finished in third place (10:38.26). Anna Hutchins of Southwest Oregon (10:40.17) and Ashlynn Amon of IRSC (10:48.24) finished fourth and fifth respectively. Eve Berg of Iowa Central finished sixth (10:59.60), IRSC’s Adriana Rodriguez came seventh (10:59.62), and IRSC’s Alexandra Perez came eighth (11:08.31).

Men’s 1000 Free

Elias Contogonas of Indian River State College finished in top spot with a time of 9:27.22. His teammates Maxwell Miller (9:32.68) and Jack Oliver (9:36.19) came second and third. Arthur Marques (9:40.51) of Southwest Oregon finished fourth, Marcelo Busch of Iowa Central came fifth (9:43.15), Vini Molz of Iowa Central came sixth (9:43.20). Meanwhile, Kacper Mayerberg of Barton came seventh (9:45.60), followed by teammate Nikolas Loannides (9:46.01).

Women’s 50 Breast

Savanna Best of Indian River State College finished with top honours with a time of 28.91. In second place was Fanny Courbot of Barton Community College (29.99), while Emilie Andrin of Iowa Central finished third at 30.11. Elizabeth Spitz of Barton Community College took fourth at 30.35, while Magali Mouton of IC finished fifth (30.38), Eliza Strepenne of Southwestern Oregon took sixth (30.82), Sarah Alderman of Indian River State College came seventh (31.03) and Elizabeth Shrock of Barton Community College finished eighth (31.25).

Men’s 50 Breast

Ryan Downing of Barton took first place with a time of 25.12. He was followed to the wall by Joshua Smith of Southwest Oregon (25.23) and Olle Williamson of Indian River State (25.38). Finishing fourth was Emile Lutzeler of Iowa Central (26.11), meanwhile Rory Smith of Barton took fifth place (25.56), and Christian Taylor of Barton finished sixth (26.63). In seventh place was Simon Botton of Barton (26.72), while Logan Black of South Georgia State (26.78) rounded out the final.

Women’s 200 IM

Indian River State’s Hannah Kiely finished with top honours with a time of 2:03.38. In second place was her teammate Camryn Hudson at 2:03.95. Taryn Dailey (2:09.31) and Catherine Royden-Turner (2:10.19) of IRSC finished third and fourth respectively. Jacqueline Feurtado came fifth (2:10.30), Emilie Andrin of Iowa central came sixth (2:11.25), and IC teammates Mary Marshall (2:12.64) and Paula Ronda (2:12.80) came seventh and eighth respectively.

Men’s 200 IM

Jarryd Baxter of IRSC took home the victory with a time of 1:48.65. His teammates Brennan Hammond (1:50.04) and Aramis Rivera (1:50.68) finished second and third. Christopher Sprenger of Barton took fourth place at 1:51.99, Tjeerd Van Stein of Iowa Central came fifth (1:53.20), meanwhile Jhon Moncada came sixth (1:53.29). Carlos Cartagena Diaz of IRSC (1:54.47) and Alejandro Robles Ruiz of Southwest Oregon (1:54.79) rounded out the top eight swimmers.

Women’s 50 Free

Emma Colvin of Indian River State clinched the win in a time of 23.42. Barton’s McKayla Siemiller took runners-up honours at 24.14, meanwhile Erifylli Maroutsou of IRSC came third (25.30). Taylor Justice of South Georgia came fourth (25.47), and Zoe Beals of Iowa Central came fifth (25.60). Aubrey Leonards of South Georgia finished sixth (25.76), followed by teammate Ryleigh Smith (25.83) and RSC’s Morgan Okroi (25.96).

Men’s 50 Free

Iowa Central’s Billy Cruz Zuniga took top honours at 19.57. In second place was Emile Lutzeler also of Iowa Central at 20.33. James Camp of Southwest Oregon took third in a time of 20.44, meanwhile Vincent Fletcher of Iowa Central came fourth at 21.00. Barton’s Carlon McClerkin finished fifth (21.09), IRSC’s Jaccob Camp came sixth (21.19), Jacob Bohnert of Iowa Lakes came seventh (21.21) and David Garcia of Barton came eighth (21.34).

Women’s 1M Diving

IRSC teammates Gabby Tolento (465.10) and Kasey Crooks (328.00) finished first and second.

Women’s 800 Free Relay

Indian River State’s team (Savanna Best, Charlise Oberholzer, Camryn Hudson, Victoria Ortiz) finished in first place at 7:35.26. In second place was the team from Southwestern Oregon, meanwhile Iowa Central came third. South Georgia, Barton, Monroe came fourth, fifth and sixth.

Men’s 800 Free Relay

Indian River State’s team (Jaccob Camp, Aramis Rivera, Brennan Hammond, Elias Contogonas) won their second relay of the day at 6:48.06. Iowa Central came second, meanwhile Southwestern Oregon finished third. They were followed by Barton, Iowa Lakes, and Monroe.
