2020 Mountain West Championships: San Diego State Pulling Ahead

The San Diego State Swimming and Diving team continued to extend its sizeable lead through three days of competition at the 2020 Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships Friday. The Aztecs, led by a MW championship record in the 100-breaststroke, placed atop the podium in four events.

Through three days of competition, San Diego State controls first place with 1,058 points, maintaining its lead over second-place Nevada (729.5). UNLV (617.5), Wyoming (597), Fresno State (534) and Colorado State (533.5) mark third through sixth, respectively, while Boise State (511.5) sits in seventh and New Mexico (393) in eighth. San José State (356) and Air Force (242) round out the standings three days in.

Competition continues Friday morning with preliminary heats starting at 11 a.m. CT.

MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS: 200-YARD FREESTYLE RELAY

With a time of 1:28.67, San Diego State’s relay swim marks the third-fastest time in Conference history and fastest time in the MW this season.
The Aztecs have now won the 200-freestyle relay in two consecutive seasons.
UNLV’s second-place finish marks the highest a Rebels relay team has finished in the event since taking second in 2012. The time marks the second-fastest event time in the Conference this year.

MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS: 400-YARD INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY

Fresno State’s Darina Khisiamova set a school record in the event with a time of 4:15.28. Khisiamova’s finish is the highest for a Bulldog at the Conference championships in the event since joining the league.
McKenna Meyer’s victory marks the third time in four years an Aztec took first in the 400-yard individual medley. Meyer was the victorious Aztec in each of those three years.
Meyer (4:13.38), Khisiamova (4.15.56), San Diego State’s Kristin Murphy (4:16.39) and Fresno State’s Manuela Mendolicchio (4:16.66) all hit NCAA ‘B’ cuts in the race.

Courtney Vincent’s 52.14 marks the second-fastest time in the event from a Mountain West swimmer this season.
With Nicholle Toh’s third-place finish, it marks the third time in the last four years that a Lobo has finished in the top three in this event.
The top three times in the event all qualify as NCAA ‘B’ cuts.

MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS: 200-YARD FREESTYLE

The tie atop the podium marks the first time in MW history a tie for first has occurred at the Championships in an individual event.
Andressa Lima Cholodovskis’ top finish marks the first time since 2015 that a member of the Wolf Pack placed first in the event.
Katelyn Blattner’s top finish marks the first time in Conference history at Cowgirl topped the podium in the event at the Championship.

MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS: 100-YARD BREASTSTROKE

Klara Thormalm’s 59.36 in the event marks a MW Swimming and Diving Championships record. Thormalm broke teammate Morganne McKennan’s record (59.50) set at last year’s championships.
San Diego State’s sweep of the podium marks the second time this Championships that the Aztecs took the first three positions. SDSU swept the 50-freestyle on Thursday.
The top six times in the event all qualified as a NCAA ‘B’ cut time.

Athena Clayson’s victory marks Fresno State’s sixth individual MW champion in school history.
Clayson and Elliyan Ferrin’s times mark the fastest two times in the 100-backstroke in the league this season.
