2020 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships

Rochester, Michigan 2020

The 2020 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off today at the Oakland Aquatics Center in Rochester, Michigan. The events contested included the 200 medley relay for men and women, the 800 freestyle relay for men and women, and the women’s 3 meter diving event.

Oakland University started off the meet in spectacular fashion, winning all four of the relays contested and breaking three Horizon League Championship records in the process. The home team is leading in both the men’s and women’s competition.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay

Home team Oakland University took home the first title of the meet in blistering style. The quartet of Grace Shinske, Sydney McDowell, Susan LaGrand and Katie Colwell finished in a time of 1:38.75, to break the existing Horizon League championship record from 2018. IUPUI took second place honours, touching in a time of 1:41.18, followed by University of Wisconsin Green Bay (1:41.83). Cleveland State University finished fourth in a time of 1:43.34, closely followed by Milwaukee Panthers (1:42.84). The event was rounded out by Youngstown State University (1:44.28) and University of Illinois, Chicago (1:44.30).

Men’s 200 Medley Relay

Hosts Oakland University won their second title of the evening, with their team of Marko Khotynetskyi, Ryan Geheb, Mack Flowers, Christian Bart touching the wall at 1:26.10. They narrowly missed the Horizon League record which stands at 1:26.05 from 2016. Cleveland State University finished second in a time of 1:27.30, followed by IUPUI who finished at 1:27.66. UIC took fourth place in a time of 1:28.56, with University of Wisconsin Green Bay (1:29.40) in fifth place and Milwaukee Panthers (1:31.99) in sixth place. Youngstown State University (1:35.50) rounded out the championship final.

Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay

The hosts won their third title of the evening, breaking the existing Horizon League record from 2016 in a time of 7:16.76. Oakland University’s quartet of Sohvi Nenonen, Emily Aycock, Kiera Brough and Susan LaGrand put on a spectacular show for their home crowd. IUPUI finished in second place (7:26.93), with Cleveland State University (7:28.32) finishing third. Coming in fourth was Milwaukee Panthers (7:34.19), followed by UIC (7:37.40) and Youngstown State University (7:42.49).

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay

The hosts won their fourth consecutive title, breaking the Horizon League Championship record yet again, brooking no opposition. Oakland’s team of Marko Khtoynetskyi, Danylo Hrebelnyi, Ben Davis, Rudy Aguilar-Fernandez finished in a time of 6:26.60 to put their team comfortably in the lead. Cleveland State University took home second place honours (6:33.69), while IUPUI finished third (6:36.31). In fourth place was the team from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, who touched the wall at 6:36.70, closely followed by Milwaukee Panthers (6:37.08). The teams from UIC (6:38.11) and Youngstown State University (7:12.76) rounded out the championship final.

Women’s 3 Meter Diving

Cyndey Lindenberg of UIC took home top honours with a score of 322.60, breaking the existing Horizon League record which stood at 317.70. Winning the silver medal was Mckenzie Sanchez of Milwakuee with a score of 289.05, and the bronze medal went to Emma Kerro of Cleveland State (273.80). Bernie Turchi of Oakland finished fourth (272.05), followed by Rylee Dalhman of IUPUI (256.85), Abigail Hellinga of UIC (238.10), Angelique Wise of Oakland (238.05) and Tess Wieskopf of Youngstown (235.50).
