2020 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships Day 2 Recap

The second day of the 2020 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships saw competition in the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 200 free relay and men’s 3-meter diving event. The championship meet is being held at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Women’s 200 Free Relay

Liberty University’s team of Payton Keiner, Hannah Baker, Brittany Weiss, Colleen Donlin took home the victory with a time of 1:30.55. Finishing in second place was the team from FGCU who touched the wall at 1:32.96, while the team from UNC Asheville finished third (1:33.06).

2020 CCSA Women 200 Free Relay

Men’s 200 Free Relay

The quartet of Brady Fields, Zach Dingfield, Dowdy Sarvis and Seggio Bernardina representing Gardner-Webb University took the title with a time of 1:20.11. Incarnate Word’s team finished in second place, touching the wall in a time of 1:21.35. FAU was close behind to take third place in a time of 1:21.38.

Men’s 3-Meter Diving

Incarnate Word’s Dawson Martinez won the event with a score of 421.70, breaking the existing CCSA Championship Record in the process. In second place was Logan Downey of FAU with a score of 372.65, followed by Tim Newton of Incarnate Word (309.80). FAU teammates Michael Cannatelli (308.75) and Charlie Greene (285.95) took fourth and fifth positions respectively. Cole Becker of NJIT took sixth place (260.85), followed by Jason Checchin of Incarnate Word (227.60) and Max Hafen of NJIT (104.85).

Women’s 500 Free

Ximena Conde Merlos of Incarnate Word won first place in a time of 4:52.91. She was followed by Eva Suggs of Liberty who finished second at 4:54.14, while Brenda Diaz Martinez of Incarnate Word finished third (4:54.90). Emma Hazel of Liberty finished in fourth position (4:55.09), with Skylar Rogan of UNC Asheville finishing fifth (4:56.38) and Hannah Rowley of Incarnate Word in sixth place (4:58.49). Liberty’s Emily Manly (4:58.90) and Incarnate Word’s Maya Knutson (5:00.52) rounded out the championship final.

Men’s 500 Free

Alvaro Ibarra of Incarnate Word took home the victory with a time of 4:23.96. Taking runner-up honours was Josh Fountain of FAU with a time of 4:27.78, while Clay Riemenschneider also of FAU finished third in a time of 4:27.92. Leonardo Sanchez of Incarnate Word took fourth place touching in at 4:28.75, followed by FAU’s Will Smith (4:30.61) and Jack Shapiro (4:33.48). Sergio Duran Mata (4:34.70) of FAU and Norbert Aranyi (4:35.94) of Incarnate Word finished out the top eight swimmers.

Women’s 200 IM

Mikayla Herich of Liberty clinched the win in a time of 1:59.34, she was the only swimmer to dip below the 2 minute mark. Jessi Snover of Gardner-Webb took second place honours with a time of 2:01.68, while Liz Zeiger of FGCU finished close behind in third (2:01.77). Liberty’s Jessica Schellenboom came in fourth with a time of 2:03.30, followed by Incarnate Word’s Kristen Straszacker (2:03.98), Gardner-Webb’s Spencer Lucas (2:04.01), Liberty’s Linday Cohee (2:04.86) and Gardner-Webb’s Mary Traylor (2:04.92).

Men’s 200 IM

Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz of Incarnate Word finished in first place, touching the wall in a time of 1:46.86. Finishing in second was Chase Mattingly of Gardner-Webb, who touched in 1:48.17. He was followed by Incarnate Word teammates Alex Garriga (1:49.92) and Jared Wallace (1:49.54). Old Dominion’s Filip Svedberg finished in fifth place (1:49.57), while Jordan Mintz of Gardner-Webb came sixth (1:50.07). Kyle Douglas of FAU (1:50.76) and Hugo Eriksson of Old Dominion (1:51.63) rounded out the top eight swimmers.

Women’s 50 Free

Wiktoria Czarnecka of FGCU took home top honours with a time of 22.40, closely followed by Colleen Donlin of Liberty with a time of 22.64 and teammate Hannah Baker (22.78). Liberty teammates Payton Keiner (23.04) and Brittany Weiss (23.11) finished fourth and fifth respectively. Delaney Carlton of UNC Asheville finished sixth with a time of 23.18, while Colleen Renshaw of the Camels finished in seventh (23.31) and Melissa Cox finished eighth (23.41).

50 Free Women CCSA

Men’s 50 Free

Brady Fields of Gardner-Webb clinched a tight victory in a time of 20.02. He was followed by his teammate, Zach Dingfield, who touched the wall at 20.13 to finish a joint second along with Christopher Lestage of Incarnate Word. Rateb Hussain of FAU finished in fourth place with a time of 20.28, while Parker Harp of Old Dominion finished in fifth place (20.40).  FAU’s Connor Smoak came sixth with a time of 20.51, followed by Gardner-Webb teammates Dowdy Sarvis (20.53) and Seggio Bernardina (20.55).
