2020 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships Day 4: Villanova, Xavier Emerge Victorious

The 2020 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships concluded today at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, NY. The events contested today included the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, men’s 1-m diving and the 400 free relay.

Villanova won the women’s team championship with a dominating performance this weekend, while Xavier won the men’s team championship with a sizeable points margin between them and their nearest rival.

Women’s 1650 Free

Brenna McLaughlin took home the victory for Villanova with a time of 16:47.33, well ahead of her nearest rival. Finishing second was Georgetown’s Corey Moon with a time of 16:56.49, while Anna Turner of Villanova took third place at 17:00.48. Villanova grabbed third through sixth spots with Emily Provenzo (17:02.52), Nicole Welch (17:09.14) and Andrea Fong (17:10.81). Georgetown’s Noelle Fimbres came seventh at 17:15.66, while Emma Kauffeld of Xavier finished eighth at 17:28.41.

Men’s 1650 Free

Andrew Martin of Xavier finished with top honours at 15:20.03, followed by Justin Viotto of Providence College at 15:34.07. Will Serad of Xavier came in third with a time of 15:38.78, meanwhile his teammate Brett Wilson came fourth at 15:40.82. Villanova’s Jake McIntyre finished fifth at 15:41.93, while Seton Hall’s Caleb Smith finished sixth at 15:48.37. Reid Hutcherson of Villanova (15:51.99) and Matthew Braviak of Georgetown (15;56.75) rounded out the top eight swimmers.

Women’s 200 Back

Kelly Montesi of Villanova won her third individual title of the meet, winning the 200 back by over three seconds at 1:58.00. Phoebe Slaughter of Georgetown came second at 2:01.22, meanwhile Gracie Wielar of Villanova came third at 2:01.37. In fourth place was Ali Fort of Xavier at 2:01.77, while Seton Hall’s Marianne Molloy came fifth at 2:01.82. Elizabeth Sargent of Seton Hall finished in sixth (2:02.23), Eve Mauze of Georgetown came seventh (2:02.41) and Hannah Pugh of Butler finished eighth (2:03.52).

Men’s 200 Back

Georgetown’s Andrew Carbone swept the backstrokes with a time of 1:42.11, breaking the Big East Record in the process. In second place was Villanova’s Justin Cucchi with a time of 1:44.61, while Seton Hall’s Ross Pantano finished third at 1:46.91. Xavier’s Alexander Sironen was fourth at 1:47.06, meanwhile Georgetown’s Brett Sherman came fifth at 1:47.81. Xavier’s Benjamin Quon finished sixth (1:48.20), Matthew Braviak came seventh (1:49.61) and Henry Hollinshead finished eighth (1:50.27).

Women’s 100 Free

Millicent Routledge of Villanova won her third title of the meet, sweeping the 50-100-200 freestyles. She won in a time of 49.78, the only swimmer to dip below the 50 second barrier. Finishing second was Emily Conners of Xavier with a time of 50.40, while Georgetown’s Belinda Donohoe finished third at 50.78. Xavier teammates Emily Saugstad (50.89) and Abigail Garner (51.03) were close behind for fourth and fifth place. Georgetown’s Lauren Rutledge finished sixth at 51.78, followed by Seton Hall’s Cornelia Jerresand (52.16) and Xavier’s Maureen Cummins (52.18).

Men’s 100 Free

Sean Devlin of Georgetown took home top honours, with a winning time of 44.93. Thomas Minar of Seton Hall took second place at 45.21, with teammate Ben Laclair close behind at 45.32 for third place. Christian Thomas of Xavier finished fourth at 45.43, while Stephen Krecsmar of Villanova took fifth (45.71), and Jared Ritz of Xavier took sixth (45.75). Georgetown’s Sean Percin (45.95) and John Calderwood (46.70) rounded out the championship final.

Women’s 200 Breast

Kaitlin Gravell of Villanova finished in first place with a time of 2:18.53. Margaret Kleinsmith also of Villanova took second place at 2:20.03, followed by Georgetown’s Alexandra Rieker (2:20.34). Alexa Kolodgie of Seton Hall came fourth at 2:21.52, meanwhile Rayann Jaryszak of Villanova came fifth at 2:21.53. Xavier’s Lydia Schaeffer finished sixth at 2:21.77, while Megan Smith of Georgetown (2:21.85) and Xavier’s Alison Herman (2:24.93) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 200 Breast

Josh Tosoni of Seton Hall swept the breaststroke events with a time of 1:57.90. In second place was Connor Morikawa of Georgetown with a time of 1:58.20, meanwhile Jonathan Bernard of Xavier came third at 2:00.30. Carlson Temple of Georgetown finished in fourth place with a time of 2:00.51, Thomas Staes of Seton Hall came fifth (2:01.39), Cameron Weese of Xavier came sixth (2:02.07). Nathaniel Goldfarb of Georgetown came seventh (2:02.24) and Will Serad of Xavier finished in eighth (2:05.25).

Women’s 200 Fly

Taylor Hogan clinched the victory for Xavier with a time of 2:02.13. Tarryn Els of Villanova took runner-up honours at 2:02.63, closely followed by Sierra Cripps of Seton Hall (2:02.67). Cristina Barrett of Georgetown finished in fourth place (2:03.15), Micaela Grassi of Villanova finished fifth (2:03.24) and Annah Van Gheem took sixth place (2:03.57). Gabriella Meringolo of Georgetown (2:05.60) and Xavier’s Lorelei Gaertner (2:07.63) rounded out the championship final.

Men’s 200 Fly

Charles Clark took home the win for Xavier with a time of 1:48.30. His teammate Brandon Abboud finished second at 1:48.67, meanwhile Seton Hall’s Joseph Gibson took third place at 1:49.27. Nicholas Fiddler of Villanova finished fourth at 1:49.36, while Justin Oosterwyk of Seton Hall finished fifth at 1:49.98. Liam Cosgrove of Seton Hall finished sixth at 1:50.74, while Justin Viotto of Providence came seventh (1:51.00) and Brett Wilson of Xavier finished eighth (1:51.79).

Men’s 1-Meter Diving

Michael Perra of Villanova took the top spot with a score of 579.00, meanwhile his teammate Michael Ackert finished second scoring 511.40. In third place was Joseph Hofman of Georgetown scoring 511.25, Griffin Edmonds of Georgetown finished fourth at 459.60 and Tim Lynch of Seton Hall finished fifth with a score of 432.00.

Women’s 400 Free Relay

Villanova’s team of Kelly Montesi, Abbey Berloco, Gracie Wielar and Millicent Routledge took home joint top honours with a time of 3:21.62 with the team from Xavier (Emily Saugstad, Abigail Garner, Erin Merkee, Emily Conners). Finishing third was the team from Georgetown (3:26.13), followed by Seton Hall, Providence and Butler.

Men’s 400 Free Relay

Georgetown University took home the victory with their quartet of Sean Devlin, Michael Baldini, Sean Percin and Andrew Carbone touching the wall at 2:59.05 for the win. Finishing in second spot was the team from Xavier at 2:59.60, while Seton Hall finished third at 3:00.25. Meanwhile, Villanova and Providence finished fourth and fifth respectively.
