2020 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships: Day 2 Recap

The second day of the 2020 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships got underway today at the Nassau County Aquatics Center at East Meadow, NY. The events contested today include the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 200 free relay and the men’s 3M diving event.

On the men’s side, Xavier and Villanova are in the top spot, while on the women’s side, Villanova is clearly in the lead. The Georgetown women are close behind.

Women’s 500 Free

Nicole Welch of Villanova took top honours with a time of 4:49.64. In second place was Julie Stankiewicz of Seton Hall with a time of 4:52.41. Villanova’s Brenna McLaughlin took third place in a time of 4:53.93. Cristina Barrett of Georgetown came fourth (4:54.08), Corey Moon of Georgetown came fifth (4:56.03), and Emily Provenzo of Villanova came sixth (4:56.05). Villanova teammates Anna Turner (5:01.15) and Andrea Fong (5:03.53) rounded out the championship final. Villanova showcased its freestyle depth with five of the eight finalists.

Men’s 500 Free

Brett Sherman of Georgetown clinched the victory in a time of 4:22.63. In second place was Andrew Martin of Xavier with a time of 4:23.41, meanwhile Ben Laclair of Seton Hall came third at 4:24.86. Finishing in fourth place was Caleb Smith of Seton Hall (4:30.59), followed by teammate Joseph Gibson (4:30.78) and Xavier’s Benjamin Quon (4:30.92). Villanova’s Jake McIntyre (4:31.90) and Georgetown’s Matthew Braviak (4:34.27) finished in seventh and eighth place respectively.

Women’s 200 IM

Villanova University made a clean sweep of the podium, taking the first three spots. Kelly Montesi took home the title touching the wall in a time of 2:01.33. Rayann Jaryszak finished second in a time of 2:02.51, while Kaitlin Gravell finished in third place with a time of 2:03.38. Hannah Pugh of Butler finished fourth in a time of 2:04.20. Phoebe Slaughter of Georgetown took fifth place (2:04.42), meanwhile Tarryn Els of Villanova came sixth (2:05.03). Finishing seventh was Brooke Atkins of Xavier, while Marianne Molloy of Seton Hall finished eighth (2:05.31).

Men’s 200 IM

Andrew Carbone swimming for Georgetown took home the win in a time of 1:46.10. He was followed to the wall by Justin Cucchi of Villanova (1:47.37) and Michael Baldini of Georgetown (1:49.07). Xavier’s Jonathan Bernard came fourth in a time of 1:49.55, while Villanova’s Francis Prikasky (1:50.32) and Providence’s Andrew Ferrell (1:50.78) finished fifth and sixth respectively. Josh Tosoni of Seton Hall (1:51.01) and Brandon Abboud of Xavier (1:51.84) rounded out the championship final.

Women’s 50 Free

Villanova’s Millicent Routledge took home the victory, touching the wall in a time of 22.79. Taking runner-up honours was Emily Conners of Xavier at 22.96. Belinda Donohoe of Georgetown finished third in a time of 23.25. Xavier’s Emily Saugstad took fourth place (23.35), Perri Stahl of Villanova came fifth (23.49), Erin Merke of Xavier came sixth (23.54), Cornelia Jerresand of Seton Hall came seventh (23.64) and Lauren Zawacki of Providence came eighth (23.81).

Men’s 50 Free

Thomas Minar of Seton Hall took top honours in a time of 20.36. Stephen Krecsmar of Villanova finished in second place with a time of 20.54, while Christian Thomas of Xavier came third at 20.63. Noah Coomler of Xavier came fourth (20.76), Samuel Hendrix of Seton Hall came fifth (20.87), and Roark Lundal of Xavier finished sixth (20.94). Andrew Kelley of Villanova (20.97) and Ethan Wing of Xavier (21.05) rounded out the championship final.

Men’s 3M Diving

Michael Perra of Villanova clinched the victory with a score of 568.10, while his teammate Michael Ackert finished in second place (544.15). Joseph Hofman of Georgetown finished third scoring 501.00. Joe Swindal of Villanova took fourth place with a score of 496.20, meanwhile Tim Lynch of Seton Hall came fifth scoring 476.15.

Women’s 200 Free Relay

Xavier University took home the win with their quartet of Emily Saugstad, Erin Merke, Maureen Cummins, Emily Conners touching the wall at 1:31.95. The team from Villanova finished second with a time of 1:33.29, while Seton Hall finished third at 1:34.14. Butler came fourth, Providence came fifth, and Georgetown came sixth.

Men’s 200 Free Relay

Xavier University jointly won their second relay of the evening touching the wall at 1:21.05 for the win, along with the team from Seton Hall. Georgetown finished third at 1:21.43. Villanova took fourth place at 1:22.91, meanwhile Providence finished fifth at 1:22.93 to round out a tough fought event.

The 2020 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships continues tomorrow with the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay.
