Virginia was a factor in nearly every race over the four days of the ACC Championship, sealing its 16th title with three wins Saturday night.

Morgan Hill captured the 100 freestyle crown in 47.47 seconds. Paige Madden claimed the 1,650 free decisively, on the way to being named Most Outstanding swimmer. And the 400 free relay of Kate Douglass, Alexa Cuomo, Madden and Hill put an exclamation point on the meet by winning the 400 free relay in an NCAA A cut of 3:10.57, exactly one second faster than Louisville.

“I couldn’t be happier for this team of young ladies,” head coach Todd DeSorbo said. “They have been working together all year towards a common goal, and that goal was not necessarily to win the ACC Championship, but outdo ourselves. I told them that I believe this was the best team in the history of the University of Virginia. So, the goal here at ACCs was to score more points than this team has ever scored. Day-to-day, event-to-event, we set out to do that, and they accomplished that. It was exciting to see.”

UVA won six individual titles, with Madden claiming three. She’s the 14th ACC Championship MVP in program history and first since Lauren Purdue in 2013. Virginia’s title matches the 16 won by North Carolina, most in ACC history. The Cavaliers also won four relays.

“The greatest thing about it was that it was a full team effort,” DeSorbo said. “We had 21 athletes here, 18 swimmers and three divers, and every single one of them contributed a large amount to that, whether it was points, support, cheering, excitement, energy. They all performed really well and in the end that’s what won the title for us. And we did score more points than any team in the history of the ACC. It’s a true testament to their hard work.”

Sophie Hansson held off the charge by Margaret Nelson of Virginia as the NC State sophomore completed the breaststroke double. She clocked in an A cut of 2:05.59. Nelson (31.72 last 50) nearly chased her down but settled for second in 2:05.68 with teammate Kate Douglass third in 2:05.89. All three are A cuts.

Platform Diving

Florida State’s Molly Carlson got the win with 297.25 points on the way to being named ACC Championships Diving MVP. It’s the third straight year the senior has garnered that honor, and she’s the first Seminole to medal in all three diving events since the platform competition was added to the ACC meet. Second was Georgia Tech’s Cami Hidalgo.

“What can I say about the body of work Molly has put together at the meet over four years,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “I think it speaks for itself. MVP three out of four years, the only one she didn’t win was when she had wrist surgery and didn’t have great use of her hands. She’s amazing. We’re all incredibly proud of her.”
