2019 USA Swimming Futures Championships Greensboro: Anna Freed, Ashley Wordon Dominate the Night

The 2019 Swimming Futures Championship continued for day three in Greensboro, NC. Events included the 200 fly, 50 free, 200 breast, 100 back, and 400 free. Marlins of Raleigh’s Ashley Wordon and Sarasota Tsunami’s Anna Freed were two of the top place finishers of the night, both dominating the field by bringing home gold in both the 200 fly and 100 back, respectively. Close races in both the men’s and women’s 50 free had competitors inching each other out for the top spot. Fast swims, close races, time drops and even some Olympic Trial cuts were had. 

Women’s 200 Fly 

Placing first in the 200 fly was Marlins of Raleigh’s Ashley Wordon. Wordon clocked in at a 2:14.57, dropping over a second to achieve the Olympic Trial cut. Second place went to Blue Dolfins’ Lockett Bowley with a 2:16.18. Sumner Chimielewskiunattached, placed third with a 2:18.03.

North Palm Beach’s Jennifer Secrest (2:18.08.), Tac Titans’ Taylor Bloom (2:18.45), SBSC’s Evelyn Sierra (2:19.38), Marlins of Raleigh’s Caroline Crouse (2:20.24), and TCA’s Blair Stoneburg (2:20.95) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 200 Fly 

Elliot Cooper of Avon Community Swim Team’s brought home the gold in the men’s 200 fly with a 2:03.11 – over a two-second drop. Second place went to North Florida Swimming’s Tyler Watson in a 2:03.71. Matthias Brown of Atomic City was the third place finisher in a 2:05.80. 

Tac Titans’ Cameron Thomas (2:05.83), Avon Community’s Jackson Vanwanzeele (2:05.97), Sarasota’s Alexander Gusev (2:08.03), Jupiter Dragons’ Caleb Petranchuk (2:08.23), and South Bend’s Samuel Sierra (2:06.17) completed the top eight. 

 

Women’s 200 Breast 

Dropping over three seconds to place first in the women’s 200 breast was Marlins of Raleigh’s Genevieve Joyce. Joyce clocked in at a 2:33.72. Second place went to Sarasota’s Gracie Weyant. Blue Dolfins’ Madison Koutavas placed third with a 2:37.94.

Atomic City’s Saige Kemeny (2:38.14), MAC’s Paige Thome (2:39.52), Tennessee Aquatics’ Hannah Holman (2:39.74), Rockford’s Masy Folcik (2:40.22), and South Florida’s Olivia Dinehart (2:39.93) rounded out the top eight.

 

Men’s 200 Breast

Placing first for the men was Atomic City’s Bryar Long. Long touched the wall at a 2:18.65, dropping over a second. Marlins of Raleigh’s Connor Dalbo placed second with a 2:19.46. Third place went to Sailfish’s Matthew Lucky in a 2:21.58.

Rounding out the top eight was Mid-Michigan’s Phillip Meffert (2:22.52), T2’s Andrew Garner (2:23.01), Harnett County’s Jordan Mintz (2:23.13), Marlins of Raleigh’s Bode Rigenbach (2:24.15), and North Florida’s Jackson Skigen (2:26.75).

Women’s 50 Free 

It was a tight race for the top eight in the women’s 50 freestyle. Ultimately bringing home the gold was thirteen-year-old Gabrielle Vanbrunt of Greenfield Community in a 26.12. Second place went to Seminole’s fifteen-year-old Stephanie Akakabota with a 26.22. Blue Dolfins’ Megan Hansen placed third with a 26.39. 

North Palm Beach’s Jennifer Secrest (26.59), Mecklenburg Swim’s Eboni McCarty (26.66), Eagle Aquatics’ Erika Pelaez (26.74), RATS’ Sarah Evans (26.75), and Dynamo’s Peyton Curry (27.16) completed the top eight. 

Men’s 50 Free 

It was a tight race for the top eight as well in the men’s 50 free, with almost every finisher going sub-24. First place went to Nashville Aquatics’ Spencer Jyawook with a 23.43. Right behind him was Performance Aquatics’ Josiah Morales in a 23.51. Academy Aquatics’ Robert Cecil took third with a 23.58. 

Completing the top eight was Sky Family YMCA’s Wesley Kephart (23.67), Lake Lytal’s Reese Branzell (23.68), unattached Stephen Jones (23.82), Sunkist’s Bryan Sullivan (23.93), and Dynamo’s Idris Muhammad (24.06). 

Women’s 100 Back 

After her win in the 200 fly just events before, Sarasota Tsunami’s Anna Freed took home the gold in the women’s 100 back, dropping almost two seconds to clock in at a 1:02.71. Enfinity Aquatic Club’s Morgan Jones took second in a 1:03.42. Right behind her was Pine Crest’s Julia Podkoscielny, placing third with a 1:03.46. 

Unattached Lily Welsh (1:03.60), CANE’s Alaina Skellett (1:03.64), Grosse Pointe Gators’ Sophie Housey (1:03.79), Performance Aquatics’ Helen Hsu (1:04.25), and Dynamo’s Kyla Maloney (1:04.95) rounded out the top eight. 

Men’s 100 Back 

Placing first for the men and achieving the Olympic Trial cut as Fins Swim Team’s Erek Nelson with a 56.33. Second place went to Tac Titans’ Alexander Tomlinson in a 57.04, Placing third was Enfinity’s Tucker Burhans with a 57.56. 

Unattached Lance Norris (57.98), Mid-Michigan’s John Ryan (58.55), City of Mobile’s Stephan Conrad (58.64), Dynamo’s Ryan Patterson (58.65), and Marlins of Raleigh’s Colin Cotter (58.88) rounded out the top eight. 

Women’s 400 Free 

Marlins of Raleigh’s Adrianna Cera claimed the win in the last women’s event of the night with a two second drop to clock in at a 4:20.65. Second place went to Sarasota’s Addison Sauickie with a 4:21.97. Stella Grace Watts of Area Tallahassee clocked in at a 4:22.83 to place third. 

Atomic City’s Emily Aycock (4:22.90), Fast Lane’s Madison Murtagh (4:23.60), Sarasota’s Savannah Barr (4:25.85), Marlins of Raleigh’s Madeleine Bachand (4:27.09), and North Palm Beach’s Nicole Gomez (4:33.32) rounded out the top eight. 

Men’s 400 Free

In the final top three of the night, each finisher was sixteen years old or younger. Tac Titans’ fifteen-year-old Braeden Haughey dominated the final event of the night, placing first and beating the nearest opponent by four seconds. Haughey clocked in at a 3:56.42, achieving the Olympic Trial cut. Second place went to City of Mobile’s fifteen-year-old Andrew Jordan with a 4:00.56. Chattahoochee’s sixteen-year-old Grant Davis took third with a 4:01.15. 

Unattached Lance Norris (4:01.57), Central Florida’s Riley Sampson (4:02.90), Race Aquatics’ Neal Wolfram (4:04.12), SRQ’s Dimiter Zafirov (4:05.41), and Central Florida Marlins’ Noah Smith (4:12.57) completed the final top eight of the night. 

The final day of competition will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. Events include the 100 free, 200 back, 200 IM, 400 Medley Relay, Women’s 1500 Free, and Men’s 800 Free.
