2019 Speedo Sectionals Indianapolis: Day 1 Recap

The 2019 Speedo Sectionals in Indianapolis have begun. This competition is being swim in long course meters at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. This meet is capped at 850 swimmers varying in all age categories. Day 1 events include: men’s and women’s 200 back, 50 free, 200 breast, women’s 800 free, men’s 1500 free, and timed finals for the men’s 200 free relay and women’s 800 free relay.

Men’s 200 Free Relay

This event was swum during the prelims session as a timed final. Carmel Swim Club’s Jacob Mitchell, Wyatt Davis, Griffin Hadley, and Alec Delong touch the wall first in a time of 1:34.35. West Ottawa Swim Club touches second (1:35.75) and Drop Aquatics touches third (1:36.35).

Women’s 800 Free

Mariah Denigan from Northern KY Clippers Swimming touches first in a time of 8:44.08. Coming in second was SwimMAC’s Morgan Razewski (8:52.79) ahead of Mid-Michigan Aquatics’ Lola Mull (8:54.23). In a close finish for fourth place, Scarlet Aquatics’ Junseo Kim touches fourth (8:58.49) ahead of Northern KY Clippers Swimming’s Allison Piccirillo (8:59.05) and Waves Bloomington/Normal Y’s Eliot Kennedy (8:59.22). Bluefish Swim Club’s Erin Jachym touches seventh (9:00.17) and Drop Aquatics’ Emma Inch finishes eighth (9:00.36).

Women’s 200 Back

Bluefish Swim Club’s Summer Smith touches first in a time of 2:12.63, dropping 5 seconds from her entry time. Kathryn Ackerman from Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics touches second (2:14.13) just ahead of Carmel’s Madelyn Christman (2:14.65). The top 3 swimmers were all under the qualifying standards for 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Mariah Denigan from Northern KY Clippers Swimming touches fourth in a time of 2:15.43, just ahead of Atlantis Swimming’s Justine Murdock (2:15.55). Rounding out the A final were SwimMAC teammates Faith Hefner (2:16.62) and Kiley Wilhelm (2:18.42), and Fisher Area Swimming Tiger’s Josephine Ramey (2:20.22).

Men’s 200 Back

Carmel Swim Club teammates Wyatt Davis and Jacob Mitchell go 1-2. Davis breaks the 2:00 barrier touching first in a time of 1:59.20 and Mitchell touching in a 2:01.43. SwimMAC’s Hugh Svendsen touches third (2:02.30) and Bluefish Swim Club’s Harrison Homans touches fourth (2:03.46). The top three finishers were also under the qualifying standards for 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Carmel’s Griffin Hadley touches fifth (2:04.67) ahead of South Lyon Aquatics’ Hunter Gubeno (2:07.26), and SwimMAC teammates Wesley Barnett (2:07.92) and Conall Monahan (2:08.72).

Women’s 50 Free

Ashley Turak of Drop Aquatics finises first in a time of 25.82 ahead of Northridge Area Swimming Association’s Elsa Fretz (25.96). Both of these swimmers were under the qualifying standards for 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Touching third was Carmel’s Kelly Pash (26.00) ahead of SwimMAC’s Elizabeth Sowards (26.28) and Waves Bloomington/Normal Y’s Anna Peplowski (26.31). Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics’ Katherine Ackerman comes in sixth (26.40) with Ohio State Swim Club’s Riley Huddleston (26.71) and SwimMAC’s Elizabeth Vannote (26.55) following closely behind.

Men’s 50 Free

Lakeside Swim Team’s Hunter Tapp finished first in a time of 23.03, the only swimmer under the qualifying standards for 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics’ Cameron Peel finished second (23.25) just ahead of teammate Devon Nowicki (23.60), and Bluefish Swim Club’s River Wright (23.72). Carmel’s Alec Delong and FORT’s Tristan Dewitt tie for fifth in a time of 23.76 while Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics’ Jacob Heeres touches seventh (23.83) and Jacob Ryan of Atlantis Swimming touches eighth (24.32).

Men’s 1500 Free

Carmel’s Jacob Mitchell finishes first in a time of 15:37.94 followed by Fishers Area Swimming Tigers’ Jackson Carlile (15:50.08) and Vacationland Swim Club’s Charles Clark (15:57.98). Touching fourth is Northern KY Clippers Swimming’s Elijah Shoyat (16:06.81) and closely behind is Fishers Area Swimming Tigers’ Aaron Frollo (16:07.80). Rounding out the top 8 are NASA’s Nicholas Dibley (16:15.57), Bluefish Swim Club’s Joshua Parent (16:17.60), and La Mirada’s Myles Tran (16:22.22).

Women’s 200 Breast

Ohio State Swim Club’s Janessa Mathews touches first in a time of 2:31.48 ahead of SwimMAC’s Desirae Mangaoang (2:32.04) and Kentucky’s Claire Donan (2:32.54). SwimMAC’s Emma Nelson comes in fourth with a time of 2:33.88. Fifth and sixth place go to Bluefish Swim Club’s Ella Smith (2:35.88) and BAC’s Clarissa Sabin (2:36.45). SwimMAC’s Grace Rainey touches seventh (2:38.22) and Northern KY Clippers Swimming’s Selina Reil touches eighth (2:39.51).

Men’s 200 Breast

West Ottawa Swim Club’s Derek Maas finishes first in a time of 2:15.38, dropping more than 6 seconds from his seed time. La Mirada Armada’s Kevin Vargas touches second (2:17.97) just ahead of FORT’s Tristan Dewitt (2:18.46). Coming in fourth is Greater Toledo Aquatic Club’s Andrew Grespin (2:19. 91) out touching Northern KY Clippers Swimming’s Patrick Merse (2:19.96). Sixth through eighth place are SWAC’s Cameron Luarde (2:21.82), Eagle Swim Team’s Maximilian Verheyen (2:22.33), and Greater Toledo Aquatic Club’s Maxwell Rutledge (2:23.78).

Women’s 800 Free Relay

Carmel Swim Club’s Ashlyn Underhill, Kendra Bowen, Gretchen Lueking, and Kelly Pash finish first in a time of 8:13.19. Northern Kentucky Clippers Swimming touch second (8:17.02) and Waves Bloomington/Normal Y finish third (8:28.67).
