2019 New Zealand Swimming Championships: Ali Galyer, Lewis Clareburt, Zac Reid Qualify For Worlds

The first night of the 2019 New Zealand Swimming Championships were in full swing. The night’s events included the women’s 50 free, 200 back, 50 fly and the 1500. On the men’s side the event list included the 400 IM, 100 back and 800 free. There were also several swimmers that have qualified for the FINA World Championship team. Those swimmers are Lewis Clareburt (400 IM), Ali Galyer (200 back) and Zac Reid (800 free).

Women’s 50 Free

In first was Chelsey Edwards of Capital Swim Club in a time of 25.88. In second was Erika Fairweather of Neptune Swim Club in a time of 26.17. In third was Paige Flynn of St Peter’s Swimming Club with a time of 26.59. In fourth and fifth were Olivia Collins of  St Peter’s Western in a time of 26.69 and Ella Ramsay of St Peter’s Western with a time of 26.73. Rounding out the top eight were Natasha Johnson of Aquagym Swimming Club (26.85), Paige Schendelaar-Kemp of Howick Pakuranga (27.04), and Andie Quirke of North Shore Swimming Club (27.20)

Men’s 400 IM

In first was Lewis Clareburt of Capital Swim Club in a time of 4:15.1. Clareburt qualified for the 2019 World Championships with his swim at the New Zealand Swimming Championships. In second was Luan Grobbelaar of Kiwi West Aquatics with a 4:23.54.

In a tie for third was Talon Lindquist of Kodiak KingFishers and Callum Prime of North Shore Swimming Club 4:31.79. In fifth was Lochlainn O’Connor of Evolution Aquatics Tauranga in a time of 4:33.08. Jeremy Tasker of North Canterbury Swim Club Inc was sixth with a time of 4:37.27. Brandon Schuster of Samoa was seventh with a time of 4:37.62. Andrew Rattray of Howick Pakuranga rounded out the top eight with a time of 4:40.43.

Women’s 200 Back

Ali Galyer of North Shore Swimming Club touched first with a time of 2:09.78 at the New Zealand Swimming Championships. The swim also qualified her for Worlds in five weeks.

Emma Godwin of Heretaunga Sundevils followed with a time of 2:15.07. Gina Galloway of North Shore Swimming Club was third with a time of 2:15.88. In fourth was Tyler Finau of Enterprise Swim Club with a time of 2:18.66. Cassie Wright of Qeii Swim Club was fifth with a time of 2:19.01. In sixth was Ella Drinnan of North Shore Swimming Club in a time of 2:21.48. In seventh was Sophie Irving of Capital Swim Club in a time of 2:23.71. Sasha Reid of Aquabladz New Plymouth Swimming rounded out the top eight with a time of 2:25.00.

Men’s 100 Back

Bradlee Ashby of North Shore Swimming Club was victorious in a time of 54.48. Kane Follows followed (Mt Eden Swimming) in a time of 54.78. Corey Main of Howick Pakuranga touched third with a time of 54.89. In fourth was Andrew Jeffcoat of Pukekohe Swimming Club in a time of 55.25. Bayley Main of Howick Pakuranga was fifth with a time of 56.31. In sixth was Zac Dell of Pukekohe Swimming Club in a time of 56.34. In seventh was Jason Churches of Parnell Swimming in a time of 56.99. Cameron Gray of North Shore Swimming Club was eighth with a time of 57.95.

Women’s 50 Fly

Helena Gasson of Coast Swimming Club touched first in a time of 26.93. In second was Vanessa Ouwehand of Phoenix Aquatics in a time of 27.60. In third was Chelsey Edwards of Capital Swim Club in a time of 27.84. In fourth was Olivia Collins of St Peter’s Western in a time of 27.89. In fifth was Alice Waldow of United Swimming Club with a time of 27.91. Ella Ramsay of St Peter’s Western was sixth with a time of 27.96. In seventh was Paige Schendelaar-Kemp of Howick Pakuranga with a time of 27.98. In eighth was Jessica Scott of Neptune Swim Club in a time of 28.73.

Men’s 800 Free

Zac Reid of Aquabladz New Plymouth Swimming won the event in a time of 7:57.40 at the New Zealand Swimming Championships. Reid was able to qualify for the World Championships with the swim.

In second was Quinton Hurley of Jasi Swim Club with a time of 8:11.4. In a tie for third was Zhou Wang of Shanghai Swimming Team and Phoenix Douglas of Capital Swim Club with a time of 8:22.26. In fifth was Louis Clark of Aquagym Swimming Club with a time of 8:27.91. Riley Taylor of Swim Timaru was sixth with a time of 8:29.64. In seventh was Bronson Lloyd of Raumati Swimming Club with a time of  8:32.01.  John Clark of Whakatane Swimming Club rounded out the top eight with a time of  8:33.15.

Women’s 1500 Free

In first was Emma Robinson of Capital Swim Club with a time of 16:41.74. In second was Caitlin Deans of Neptune Swim Club in a time of 16:58.13. Hayley McIntosh of Phoenix Aquatics was third with a time of 17:12.88. In fourth was Gina McCarthy of Hillcrest Swim Club with a time of 17:15.96. In fifth was Naia Anderson of Mt Maunganui Swimming Club in a time of 17:40.93. Bree Middleton of Ashburton Swim Team touched sixth with a time of 17:41.82. In seventh was Ruby Heath of Capital Swim Club in a time of 17:47.86. In eighth was Lucy North of Aquabladz New Plymouth Swimming in a time of 17:56.68.
